Comment: Hey all I have a 500gb SATA drive that shows up as 127gb. Every where I look says I need to plug it into an ATA controller card. Is this true? Wouldnt this limit the use of the drive? I didnt know that that was the fix for SATA drives as well, I thought it was only for IDE (correct me if Im wrong) I have an ABIT KN8 Ultra 1.1 mobo, and i installed windows xp SP2

Reply: (edit)It's a bios limitation (on older motherboards) and goes for both types of drives. If the bios only recognizes it as 127gb, there 'might' be an upgrade for it. A PCI controller card with 48 bit LBA compatibility will fix the problem. It will not limit the use of the drive. Note that XP requires SP1 (at least) to recognize drives over 127gb. Reply: (edit)I installed SP2. I checked the ABIT site and they said all boards made after 2003 have the ability to view drives 160gb and over. this board has PCI X and stuff on it and I got it on Thursday so I know its past 2003. Its not an older board.

Reply: (edit)Does the bios see the full drive? Did you install SP2 'after' the drive was installed? If so, go to Disk Management > Action > Rescan disks and see if it will pick up the correct size. Do yourself a favor BACKUP!
