500 GB external HD now reads as 279 GB

Specs: Windows 7, Intel 7/ 8GB RAM
I have a Rock mobile HD with 500GB of space. recently it stopped registering at 500 GB and now shows 279GB

I guess i should have finished with- ANyone know why it does so, and what i can do to fix it. I tried formatting it thru the properties page on the HD folder (F: drive). only registers as 279GB

Where are you reading those numbers? Try looking in Disk Management for some incite.

I got that info from my disk management where i tried getting the computer to re-recognize the external HD at its correct amount. I also tried to reformat it from disk management to get it to go back to the original 500GB. It still registers as 279GB instead of the rated 500GB.

Note that you actually have two hardware components. The USB enclosure is the first and of course the actual hard drive. I don't know enough about the circuitry in an enclosure to say if it could be the cause of this of not. My guess would be that it is not. I would guess it is a partial hard drive issue.

Was the unit dropped recently?

You could try using a third party utility to find out the make of the hard drive. Download and use SIW.exe to determine the brand of hard drive in the external enclosure. Look under the storage Devices listing. Get SIW at the link below.
