Specs: Windows 7
I have a toshiba laptop about 5 years old windows 7. Dependable as can be,except for the last two months when I got a black screen two times. The first time, computer sat a couple hours then started okay. This last time, I woke up middle of night, computer had rebotted after updates. I let them insteall and was online for about five minutes. This morning when I wanted to wake up the computer, I had onli\y black screen. Cannot see anything but hear computer running. Did everything suggested with unplugging battery, holding down start key, reconnecting power, several times with no result. I even removed and re-installed the hard drive in case something was getting loose. Checked the RAM and everything was tight. I never had this problem until I started letting it update itself at night when I'm alseep.I cannot emphasize how dependable this machine has been - literally thousands of hours of use without anything major.

To isolate the problem, try/borrow an external monitor.

What is the model number of your Toshiba? A lot of the older intel based toshibas have an issue with a failing NEC/TOKIN capacitor that causes a black screen and power issues. Also does your computer power on with just the battery?
