5 min lockup

Specs: Windows XP
I am having an issue, in which my PC will boot up just fine, but for about the first 5-10 mins. of use, most programs refuse to open. Example:I open the start menu, choose windows media player, the player begins to open, then stops on a white page, nothing works. I can only close it through task manager. The same happens with every program. It also happens with certain system tools. I can open control panel, but I cannot open printers and faxes, it will only show an hour glass. Now, after 5-10 mins, I hear the HDD spin up, and just like that the machine works. I also get all of the error messages about forcing a program to close. So would you say HDD problem?

Asus P5K-E Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo 3.0 Ghz.E6850
Seagate 3.5" 250GB HDD
Nvidia 8600 GT 512MB GPU
Windows XP SP3

Sound like os problem not hdd problem. I recomend to repair os or back up your files and format the drive. Have u try to test your memory using memtest?

Thanks, I have tested the memory using memtest 86+ finished two passes, no errors. Just to be sure I booted with each of my 4 modules individually, same issue. I will see if I can repair the OS, I have a backup of the machine, I just hate reformatting, but if that is what it takes, then I will give it a shot. thanks for the help!
