What are the benfits with using CPU heatsink fans with 4-Pin Connector(s) vs. the 3-Pin models?

Any thoughts much appreciated.

4 pin connector enables fan speed control. 3 connector just enable fan speed sensing.

Is the fan speed control on the 4 pin referring to manual control of the fan speed? I have a 4 pin MB hook up - I want to get a Zalman CPU cooler, bu the fan mate 2 states it has a 3 pin connector? What are my options here (e.g., 4 to 3 pin adaptor - what is sacrificed) (I have Asus P5dg1 Pentium 4E 775)?

Intel have introduced 4 pin PWN case fan control via the motherboard headers, and the planet hasn't grasped that case fans need to have 4 pins to use that control. You can pop a 3 pin on the 4 pin header, but you'll have full speed only, and you won't melt anything

My Fan has a 4-pin connector, but my
motherboard has a 3-pin connection. The
fan connector provides a way to connect
it into a 3-pin connection, but i tried
it and my cpu fan goes way to slow at
12xxRPMS.

Is there any way to get around this problem?
