I bought a Seagate 3TB hard drive from newegg. It shows only 749GB. What is the problem? Thanks.

Windows 7 definitely supports 3TB drives so it must be a limitation of your computer's BIOS or motherboard.
Hi, phil22, riider, and DellDebbieB. I used docking stations. I tried to format using win 7 Disk Management. It just shows 749.69GB. I also used seagate DiscWizard. It shows the same.
Hi, OtheHill 。 I tried four of my docking stations. They all show the same capacity.
Did you look at the drive while in Windows Disk Management to see if there are additional partitions or unallocated space in addition to the formatted 700GB?
did your computer come with Windows 7 installed or did you upgrade from XP or Vista? Did you try slaving the 3TB drive?

Since this appears to be a laptop, you could try purchasing an external hard drive case (one that it usable/certified on larger hard drives) and connect it directly via USB port and see what Disk Manager then shows.
I believe that OtheHill is right when he says that your docking stations were never intended to be used with hard drives of that size so their firmware cannot handle the larger drive capacity. You can also check with the manufacturer of the docking stations and see if there is a way to update their firmware. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
Hi, My DELL desktop came with win 7. I use USB docking stations. I tried my 2T hard drive. It worked fine on all my four docking stations. Only this 3T doesn't work. Thanks.
Since this drive is new, you should be contacting Seagate under warranty, or if it was just received, you could return it to newegg as defective for exchange. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
You are welcome. keep us up to date. You have to be a little bit crazy to keep you from going insane.
Hi, all, I just want to let you know that I installed the hard drive internally to my desktop. It worked fine now.It shows 2.7TB. Thanks.
Glad you got it sorted out.
