3D Graphics Card Installation Issue

OS: XP Home Edition
CPU/Ram: Celeron 600MHz/256MB Ram
Product: emachines etower 600 cd
Comment:

I know it's really old but I've been trying to install an ATI Rage 128 32MB PCI card in this etower 600 for my 4 year old son. When I install the card and reboot (after changing the BIOS to PCI as primary VGA thus over-riding the on-board graphics hub) my computer beeps several times and won't even get to boot stage. I'm using a 19" LCD display and have already manually disabled the on-board graphics in device manager but still nothing. The computer detects the new hardware and it will allow me to install the provided drivers for XP yet as soon as I change the BIOS to PCI nothing! Does anyone have any ideas what problem might be causing this? Many thanks in advance.

I'm not sure, but 32 MB might not be adequate enough for your LCD display. Have you tried another monitor, such as a CRT, just to see if that changes anything ?

Thanks for your response kx5m2g.

This had crossed my mind but I kinda guessed (either correctly or incorrectly, please chirp up if anyone knows) that the Intel 810 chipset only has 4MB of on-board 3D graphics and yet still allows me to operate the LCD monitor at a resolution of 1280 x 960. Surely you would think that 32MB would be plenty, wouldn't you?

Thanks for that aci11i3s. What you're saying it seems is that I'd need to upgrade to a Pentium II or III or similar. This I'm afraid I CANNOT do because of the limitations of the motherboard. I think I can upgrade to Celeron 700 and that's about it.

One other thing I've now found out is that the power supply I have is only knocking out 120W and according to another forum I need at least 300W to power the ATI card. Does anyone know any more on this matter? Thanks again.

Are you sure the card works? If you're getting beeps when it's installed, there's either something wrong with the card or it's not seated properly in the PCI slot.

"according to another forum I need at least 300W to power the ATI card"

120W PSU seems underpowered but I highly doubt the addition of a standard PCI card (& a very old one at that) would require a 300W PSU.

The 1st thing you need to do is confirm the card is good. Have you got another system you can test it in?

Hi Jam and many thanks for your input.

I was rather hoping no-one would suggest that the card may be 'DOA' (not sure what this means exactly but I figured out it's not good!!!). I bought the card NEW and boxed on ebay from a vendor in Hong Kong. I checked the feedback and despite several others claiming they couldn't get the same item to work, I took a gamble. Well who wouldn't? It only cost £10.71 and £7 of that was P&P! And the feedback wasn't all negative as some customers appeared to have encountered no problems.

Will do as you suggest and try the card in another system. Watch this space...thanks again.

DOA = Dead On Arrival

I think £10.71 is about $20US? I know I'd never pay that much for a card that old, even if it is "new"...especially if the vendor has a lot of negative feedback & DOA complaints.

You're obviously not in the US, but have a look:

Yep, am in the UK. Don't forget though Jam that only approx $6 was the actual cost of the card itself, the other $14 was for P&P.

Ultimately, if it is DOA, then it won't matter how much I did or didn't pay, I got ripped off!!!

Thanks for the link, will take a look. Am going to try and install the card in my friends machine tomorrow, will let you know what happens from there.

I'm not sugesting you buy the card I linked to...I was just showing you what I found for $20 (w/free shipping). A 64MB MX440 is a heck of a lot better than an ATI Rage. $6 is about all the Rage is worth.

dude !!
The card might not be compatible.
Your onboard graphics is less but its AGP.
AGP-is basically a faster bus than PCI.
Your graphics card has to be LCD
compatible.
You say you here beeps
Check your RAM. Press it in.

Hmmmm, not exactly sure agree with the above, but he does bring up the subject of the beep codes & none of us asked you about that. There should be a pattern (aka code) to the beeps, but that code can vary depending on which BIOS (Award, AMI, Pheonix, etc) is used on the motherboard. Generally, continous beeping indicates a RAM problem, while 1 long beep followed by 2 or 3 short beeps indicates a video problem. Here's the AMI code list...others can be found in the menu on the right:
