Hey thar guys. I Have decided to get a new graphics card after being less than impressed when I was getting 7-15 FPS in a Halo demo at 640x480. I was gonna get a 9600XT or Pro but they dont sell them at my computer store anymore. But they do Have 6600GT's in AGP so even though this card is over speced for my sempron I am going to buy it before they phase out AGP completely like AMD has done with Socket A : (

I have one worry though, I have been reading that this is a power hungry card and I only have a 300W PSU with 15A on the 12V rail. I dont really want to spend $255(AU) to blow up my PSU and take everything with it. Should I be ok to run this with my current PSU for a couple of weeks before I get a 400-450W PSU??
Or should I leave it on the bench untill I get the new PSU? Cant wait until I can actually play the F.E.A.R. Demo in more than 5FPS!!

The card will be too much for your system, you will need to get a decent power supply of at least 400 watts. I also would say the sempron will be the bottle neck on your system now. the GT is a powerful card afterall..

The 6600GT AGP has to be connected to the PSU & your PSU is underpowered. It *probably* won't blow, but the added load may cause your system to constantly reboot, making it unuseable. And as Avun said, the Sempron will bottleneck it anyway.

I wouldn't worry about AGP getting phased out just yet. Realistically though, how long do you plan on hanging in there with your current system? Are you at least running an nForce2 board? The Radeon 9600XT isn't as good as the 6600GT, but it's still a decent gaming card...plus it's cheaper & doesn't require the PSU plug-in.

the semptro will be the bottleneck but it wont be as bad as you think

I run that card with a 3000+ Barton 333fsb

with 1gb of PC3200 ram

runs fine

so if you have a good mob that can pus the 2600 up a bit then you wont have any problems

also you WILL need a 400W psu but its worth it to get the 6600GT over the crappy 9600XT

The 9600XT is NOT crappy & is more in line with his current hardware config.

If you are contemplating getting a 6600GT and probably a beefier PSU, you might as well be get a PCI-E version. I know this would mean getting a new board yada...yada....yada.

IMHO, that is a better way to do things, the other smart choice is to just upgrade to a relatively inexpensive AGP card that will not choke both your PSU and CPU for now. I was going to suggest a 9700Pro but it requires a floppy power connector, even though I don't know what other components you got in that rig, odds are your 300W PSU @ 15A (+12V) shouldn't buckle.

My sig is on sabbatical.

You definitely won't need a 6600Gt for Halo but I guess it's more future proof than the 9600XT.

I realise that my sempron is going to be a bottleneck and I have pushed it from around 1.8GHz to 2.2GHz by takeing the fsb to 400Mhz (2x200).
And yes it is a nForce2 board. I am not going to go out and buy a new motherboard as I will then need to buy a CPU and a new PCI-E Video card too and this is actually my "new" rig, I got it about 6 months agao. As I said I was going to get a 9600XT but I am unable to get my hands on one and I cant buy stuff over the net.
So I guess I'm gonna have to get a new PSU. Thanks everyone for the help.

don't bother with 9600XT, as a matter of fact don't bother with 9800's either. you can easily get the 6600 GT and not connect the power plug - the card will automatically lower down its own power consumption by lowering down operating frequencies. So yes, it will still work, but not as great. But then I had 2 HDD's and 2 optical drives, geforce MX 4000 and VooDoo 5500 PCI (by the way this monster requires a power plug connection) - all powered up by 250 watt PSU. Your power supply should do just fine. Don't worry.
