3 fan wires

I have a fan that plugs into the motherboard. It has 3 wires. A red, a yellow, and a black. What are each one for? Does it have to have 3 or will it work with 2?

hello
red is power most times.
black is ground most times.
yellow would usally be rpm

And it will work with 2, the red and the black. I have one running that way.

On this site I have read some fans have a variable speed. No doubt this third wire is to regulate that.
