Subject: 2nd HD and Printer not recognizedOS: XP Pro w/Sp2CPU/Ram: Athlon 64 3400+ 512 |
Comment: Hi everyone, I had to rebuild my pc and swaped out the Motherboard, processor and memory. My new mother board is an ASUS A8V Delux and an Athlon 64 3400+. When I made my connections and booted to Windows my slave drive was not available in windows explorer, although using the system info and another utility in XP I was able to see that it was there and connected. The other problem is that a printer (HP Deskjet 932C) that was installed previously was not printing. I uninstalled and tried to reinstall to find that Windows is not even recognizing that it is even plugged in. I tried to install fresh drivers with no result. Anyone who can help will get me total respect. Ben

Reply: (edit)What was your previous motherboard? As for the printer: is it connected with a parallel cable? If so, enable ECP in BIOS. Intel P4 3.2E Ghz@ 3.8Ghz Asus P4P800-E Deluxe Kingston 2x512MB PC3200 D-Channel Asus AX800 Pro WD Caviar 160 GB WD Raptor 37 GB Zalman Reserator 1

Reply: (edit)Hi Lizette, The printer is on a parallel cable and the previous motherboard was a Soyo DragonPlus with an Athlon XP 1700+. I'll take a look at the BIOS when I get home. Any ideas about the HD? Ben

Reply: (edit)Set all 4 IDE channels to AUTO in BIOS and check that both IDE channels are enabled. Find the IDE channels on a different screen. The parallel port needs to be enabled in the BIOS. The type of parallel port needed is determined by the printer. You need to read the manual for the printer. Once you enable the parallel port you will see what I am referring to.

Configuring your parallel port to ECP (or just "enable") should do the trick. The reason I asked for your previous motherboard is because you usually have to re-install the OS (if the motherboards have different chipsets that is) Did you flash your BIOS to the latest version already? Other than that I can't really come up with other ideas and agree on OtheHill's suggestions. Let me know how it works out, ok? ~Liz Intel P4 3.2E Ghz@ 3.8Ghz Asus P4P800-E Deluxe Kingston 2x512MB PC3200 D-Channel Asus AX800 Pro WD Caviar 160 GB WD Raptor 37 GB Zalman Reserator 1

Reply: (edit)Ok Folks, we are almost there, I went into BIOS and fixed the printer issue but still no slave drive is visible in Explorer. I'd hate to reinstall but it may come down to it. Liz - Thanks for your help. PS. I saw a picture online of the Reserator, that thing looks really cool. It's cool to see females who are into pc's. You sound like you have quite a rig set up. Big Ups to you. Ben

Reply: (edit)Hi Ben Yeah I love the Reserator and the rest of my setup ofcourse :) Oh, I almost forgot. This might actually help.. try to use another IDE cable. Yours could be damaged during the swap. Also, try to connect with with a different/spare molex cable from the PSU. Reply: (edit)OtheHill - It does show up in BIOS and in system information (within Windows) not sure why. Liz - I'll try your suggestion but based on the fact that it is in BIOS and in Windows, but not Explorer makes me believe its something more sinister, a windows bug. Ughh! I have a theory and will try clearing the MBL and see if that does anything. Ben
