"It shows up on my computer but it doesnt show in the following: BIOS, Bootmenu, Device Manager."

What do you mean by this? When you boot up and press F1,F2 or DEl key (whatever you have to to get into bios) is the drive detected?

When you boot into Windows does the drive show up when you click on START> My Computer ?
Is it there in ControlPanel> System>Hardware>Device Manager when you look at the menu item for Disk Drives? If it is not listed then rightclick the entry and select "Scan for hardware changes" You should then be able to detect and take ownership of the drive.

I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

I just did scan for hardware changes but it didnt find any. When i hit f2 when comp starts, It only shows my C drive and not my slave drive. My slave drive is empty. I hit auto dectect but no luck. My 2nd drive was used for system restore. Now its not reading it :(

I don't know how XP can simply get deleted?

Make sure your 2nd HDD is on the 2ndary channel & not paired up with the HDD w/XP. Check that the jumpers are set correctly (don't use cable select).

This is strange for it not to show up in the bios or other item.

How did you do your reinstall of WinXP?
Did you do anything inside you case before or after you installed XP?

Can you write files to the D:drive?
One possible item maybe the cmos is messed up. This is a long shot. You would need to clear the cmos and reset the motherboard to the deflault settings.

To clear a cmos you either move a jumper on the board or remove the battery from the board. You might find instruction on howto do this at the Emachine homepage.

Obviously not.

Do you not have a legal copy of XP for this machine?

The drives on a Dell must both be jumppered as CS (cable select). This is not an option. Most computers are not like this, but Dell's are. The primary drive must be on the far end of the cable, the secondatry drive in the middle.

Do a google.com search for "jumper setting" if you don't know what this means.

You obviously don't know anything about hardware, so don't mess around inside the case.

"I installed Dell XP on my emachines and it messed up my comp"

You obviously don't know much about software either...lol.

Well, you found out the hard way that you can't use a Dell XP CD on anything but the Dell machine it was shipped with.

You still haven't explained your story...& that always helps. Why did you want to reinstall XP to begin with? Did you try to install "over the top" or did you format 1st? After you screwed up with the Dell XP, did you format before installing your "illegal" copy of XP Home? Is XP running OK now except that the 2nd HDD isn't being recognized? You said the slave drive is "empty"...have you formatted it?

I wanted to reinstall becuase i had to much crap on my comp. I think i did it over the top. When i installed XP Home, I did that over the top to i think. I did not do any formatting. WIndows is running fine its just i want my 2nd hard drive for an emergency.

Reinstalling over the top does nothing regarding all the crap you've accumulated...if you didn't delete the crap manually, it's still there. If it were my machine, I'd backup any documents, pictures, data, etc that I didn't wanna lose, then do a complete format & fresh install...but none of this is gonna help with your 2nd HDD issue. If the slave drive isn't recognized in the BIOS, it's not a software problem...it's a hardware problem.

It's a device. And it might even show the manufacturer and model #.

I don't know man. Trying to explain this to you is like describing what an orange tastes like. It's really tough. Do you have a library nearby where you can get a book?

I'm wondering; You said this is an eMachines. I have seldom seen an eMachines with a second drive, and you say you've never opened the case. The missing drive was for system restore. Sooooo, if you're referring to the "drive" that held the restore info, then what you actually mean is the partition set up by companies with the restore image on it, not a physical drive. If you reinstalled XP, there's a good chance you now have one partition, or, the second partition is still there but the MBR has been overwritten. I'm betting on the first.
