2nd Hard Drive Problem

Hey,
I just bought a gateway computer and I am trying to install my old hard drive into this one as a 2nd drive.
My old drive is an IDE so i set it up on the only place available, which is with the CD Drive...as a slave. The new drive is a SATA disc.
The Bios doesn't even recognize my old drive and I've got a bunch of stuff on there that I need to keep. How can I get this going again?
I previously installed a different hard drive onto the new computer to retrieve data from the disc, and that went fine. I guess the difference is that the one that doesn't seem to work has an OS on it. I just need to get to the data.

Check your jumpers. If the computer came with a CD drive already installed the chances are it was configured as a Master.
It is very easy to mis-read the jumper information. Check and check again. If all else fails, temporary disconnect the CD drive to copy the data, then jumper settings wont matter.
The presence or otherwise of an OS doesn't make any difference at all providing the computer is still booting from the SATA drive.

As Stuart said make it the Slave by changing the jumper on the drive.
