2GB Folder converted to 4KB File!!

October 13, 2010 at 08:29:04
Specs: Windows Vista

I had a 2GB Folder on a disc key which had all my drawings, renders, 3D models etc from a previous job on it. Yesterday I noticed that it has somehow been converted to a 4KB File, which cannot be accessed. Foolishly I had not backed up this folder and the material on it is very important for my portfolio.

Has anyone experienced this problem before or have any idea how to retrieve the data? The Disc Key is an 8GB Adata, and I have been using it on a Sony Vaio with Vista, then recently on a Vaio with Windows 7, not sure if this info is relevant..

Urgent help needed please!!

Look in Disk Management to see how the drive is identified there and post the results.

Try the flash drive on a different computer. Some readers can't handle 8GB capacity.

Also possible you may just need to take ownership of the files/folders. Google on how to do that.

You could try using recuva or if that doesn't work, use testdisk to repair the partition. Get both at the links below.

IMO, flash media is the least reliable of any available, with the exception of floppy disks.

Maybe it's Vista or something with the flash drives themselves but sometimes files or folders get hidden and are replaced with a link. Check # 7 here:

You may be able to fix it by opening the drive in 'my computer' and choose to show hidden files and then remove the attributes that way.

Well, it that's what's causing your problem.
