Comment:

I have an old Pentium III 1 ghz PC with 256 mb pc133 sdram and a 128 mb radeon 9200se. I was wondering if I should upgrade to 512 mb (2 x 256 mb sticks, it's the most the PC can go up to) for $35. Is it worth it? I usually play old games on this PC and do basic things like web serving but I also watch videos/movies on it and listen to music.

Is it worth it? Hmmm. It would speed up your system some. How much is hard to say. It depends on how much you have running and how much you are using the page file. But for $35, I would say go for it.

The size of the pagefile is not an accurate indicator of how much it's being used. But I would say that 256mb is not very much, so you probably are not running a bunch of memory hogs. There are programs that track how much the pagefile is being used. Win98 had the performance monitor, but I haven't seen one in XP yet. In the Task Manager > Performance tab you can check to see how much memory is being used and how much is free.

Jeez my memory is really getting bad. I forgot that there's a performnce tool in XP. Go to Administrative tools > Performance. You can check the pagefile usage there, among many other things.
