The 24 pin i believe refers to a connector ribbon cable which hooks from your PS to a device.

The new power supply standard is ATX12V 2.0 & has a 24-pin main ATX power plug, among other things

you can get adapters to go between 24 pin PS and 20 pin motherboard.
