2 network cards

OS: Win 98 (original)
CPU/Ram: P2 400mhz 256mb

Can I use 2 network adapters in 1 pc and have 2 other computers connected to it, if it's running win 98 (original), if it can't can I install windows XP pro or will I need a switch/router.

Yes you can. It would be a total of 4 NIC cards to get the three computers hooded together. You only need a router if you have high speed internet and you want to share it. The router also has some options, but for you it sounds that the network cards will work fine. And if you can you might as well install XP because networking with XP is a whole lot easier than 98. Just my two cents.

I'm not sure what you're trying to accomplish with this setup. I've heard of problems if you dont use two different types of nics. It would be easier to use a hub/switch?

sometimes with more than one NIC installed you have conflicts between them. My guess would be if you use one brand and model it would reduce the chance of these conflicts-but it's only a guess.
The hub/router setup with a NIC in each PC is probably the most problemfree way to go. With one PC hooked to all others you'll also need crossover cables rather than standard ethernet cables.

I agree, forget the whole crazy 3 network card scheme and get a router(NOT a hub!).
