I have a laptop plugged into external speakers. I got a second laptop. Any ideas on how I can get both laptops to work with one set of speakers? Please answer only if you've done this before. I'm tempted to try a Y adapter but am afraid it may do some damage.

Don't use a y-adapter. There is a slight possibility of damage. I use an audio mixer for 2 laptops and tv into an amp then speakers. A set of speakers is the cheapest fix. A mixer will cost at least $50.
