System operated with two hard drives;
C drive is 10 gig western and D was/is
a 4 gig Quantum.
Operating system Win98se on C drive.
Most applications were installed on
the larger drive but a few (along with
some old Word files) were stored on
secondary drive D. I don't know how
it was configured (slave, etc.). I
have no software that relates to
either hard drive. I do have the
original Win98se disc for format/re-
install. Drive C is listed as 82%
free.
Here's how remaining drives appeared
on Setup page:
Diskette Drive A: 3.5 Floppy
Diskette Drive B: Not Installed
Drives:
Primary
Drive 0 = Auto (Cyls19885, Hds16, Sec63, Size10262)
Drive 1 = None
Secondary
Drive 0 = Auto (blank; nothing)
Drive 1 = AutoSystem information stated Secondary
IDE Controller (dual fifo) hdc
Problem: Code=29 (0x1D)Doesn't really matter whether 2nd
drive has calved.
I just want to format everything
the processor will recognize and
reload Windows. Do I need help?
Step by Step would be nice!
Please and Please. Many thanks!!

try unplug the ide cable and then plug it back in again. maybe there is something wrong with ur cable or bad cmos battery.

I won't have access to this unit until
tomorrow morning but I do recall that it
hasn't kept time worth a damn lately.
This battery, is it a lithium coin type?
I'll start testing and pressing wires
first thing in morning. Makes sense.
Thank you.
ps. I'll still want to format the C drive
or both of them (if I can get the other
one going.

I would not think about re-formatting except
as a last last last last last resort. You advise the pc has not been keeping good time and this suggests a failing cmos battery, which can also lose bios settings.
Physically check out whether the 'lost' drive is connected to the primary or secondary ports and then we have to get the bios to recognise it.
I am concerned port 1 of the primary is showing none rather than auto. Is it possible that port has been turned off within the bios and if so, if the lost hd is a slave on that port it would explain the problem.
Good luck - keep us posted.

I have now disconnected/reconnected
all wires to and from both drives and
replaced the battery. Time held after
unit was unplugged for about 1/2 hour
and so battery and connection are fine.Booted up and went to start up page.
Configs held for Primary Drive 0 but
remaining 3 all listed as "none".
Changed these to "auto" and rebooted.
No change. It still doesn't recognize
the other drive. There are several programs that won't
uninstall completely (because the
application was stored on the other
drive) For example, a window appears
over the desktop at boot up stating
that link to Winfax can't be found but
I can't uninstall it either. There
are others that can't be removed in
the install/uninstall program area. That's why a format might resolve the
whole thing.... unless of course, I
can get the Quantum drive going.Thank you both for your input. I look
forward to any suggestions on how to
best resolve.

a) are both drives still connected to the original sockets on the interface/ribbon cable as they were when they were working?
If not the jumper(s) of the failed drive may need re-setting.
b) is there any possibility the jumper(s) on the failed drive have been moved or come adrift?
c) have you tried another interface cable that is known as having both sockets working?
d) Also and alternatively to (c) I would boot dos from a floppy, with just the failed hd connected and strapped as drive c: master connected to each interface socket in order to prove them. Watching what the bios detects at the same time.
We will get there in the end (hopefully)
Good luck - keep us posted.

Thank you Mike. Your advice was bang-on
from the start.
I wasn't certain how they were connected
originally, so I ignored first suggestion.
Not certain where the correct jumpers were
located and so, moved onto the last
suggestion..... almost.
I pulled the cable off the 10 gb and put
it onto the lost 4 gig and left the straps
that were on the 4 gig just hanging there.
Then(without the DOS floppy), I tried booting up and it offered me the setup page. Took it and this it what it said:
Primary
Drive 0: Cyl 8896, Hds 15, Sec 63, size 4303So the culprit was found.
I checked the other strap and realized I had
been careless in examining it the first time.
Did some pushing and prodding, replaced the
the position of the CD Rom to ease the
tension on the strap and Pow,Zoom,Presto the
next boot-up recognized both drives, the CD
Rom and the Floppy. Still some things to
deal with but this resolved the reason that
I was in this forum.
Thanks again. I really, really appreciate the help I received!

Glad to have been of help.
The reason I use dos for boot testing is it is far quicker to load and close than windows. As a matter of interest, where are you based, I am in Hammersmith, West London.
regards - Mike

I sometimes forget just how wide the
www is. I'm in Winnipeg,Manitoba,Canada.
Thanks again,
