✔ Best Answer

They are roughly all the same or similar price-band for the same capacity.
I recommend you buy a WD model, but definitely not a Seagate as all three of the Seagate externals I bought have failed in less than 2 years.

Whether you go for a desktop or a portable only you can decide. I've got two identical WD desktop models (WD Elements 1TB) and one WD portable (My Passport 1TB).

All three have been completely reliable since buying them 3 years ago.

The portables can act up when you have other USB hardware pulling off the same USB controller.

I prefer to build my own powered external drive. Buy a large enclosure with a fan and buy your own internal hard drive. Just be sure the enclosure is compatible for capacity and drive type. I have a setup as described and has been working for 5 or 6 years. Of course I don't keep it on all the time. That is another advantage of build your own. Get one with an on/off power switch. Best way to protect the external is to isolate it when not in use.

I have a hard drive docking station that handles both 2.5" & 3.5" SATA HDDs. I have 2 dedicated HDDs that I use for data storage & backups, plus I can use the dock for retrieving data from other HDDs.

EDIT: the above is what I have but it's USB 2.0. There are USB 3.0 versions available.
