A single usb port is capable of producing up to 500milliamp(from +5v rail), a 2.5 hdd use(not connected through usb) 2 to 6watt max(6watt is used when the system booting, but most time it use 2 to 3watt), if u do the math a single usb port is capable of producing 2.5w (5v x 0.5A) which is enough to run 2.5 hard drive connected through usb. I think 1.8 hdd will use less power than 2.5 hdd.

They make adapters for all that. Find the one you need.

Why did it take me over a year to phone in a problem to ATT?
