160 GB Hard drive registers with only 7 GBs.

Specs: Windows XP
I have a secondary HD that I don't use regularly, but once a month or so I may place some old files in it. I just checked it, and firstly my hard drive space went from 160 to about 7 GB. I don't mean that it is magically at full capacity, but that the total space has dropped to 7 GB. It is also telling me that it needs to be reformatted and I can't open it. Anyone know what the problem is?

- Internal HDD (hard disk drive), External USB HDD?
- Model # of HDD?
- It does this on the same PC as you always use, or is this a different PC?
- Any Virus issues?
- If it's an external drive, what is dropped or mishandled at all?

Sounds like maybe the drive could be corrupt or have some surface or electronics issues. You could test it with a HDD test utility, depending on the make of the HDD. You could also maybe try to scan it with Windows CHKDSK utility.

Just another stupid saying...
