Properly shut down both systems.

Install the product per the instructions.

Reboot systems.

If still fails, return to store.

"Best Practices", Event viewer, host file, perfmon, antivirus, anti-spyware, Live CD's, backups, are in my top 10

Did you give it long enough to establish a connection?
I Googled and found where it took 27 seconds to connect on a XP -Vista combination (on the Vista side) although a laptop was not mentioned.
Another couldn't connect to a laptop with OSX on it, after a long and frustrating session with Belkin, was eventually told to download some other software to correct the problem.
Sorry but was unable to find anything more usefull, try Googling yourself see what you can find.
I have only used Aten, but don't have a laptop.

Belkin support site at the link below has many supporting articles for the flip (kvm) device. It's possible you may not have followed the instructions properly. I have used it before and it always works.
