Comment:

hello all,

I've just been enlisted by my younger cousin to fix his laptop, HP model dv6000, as it is not booting up at all.

(this family has so many computer problems, I'm beginning to think they do it on purpose!! :-D)

On pressing the power button we get the usual lights coming on but I don't believe the fan is on. It may just be very quiet but I doubt it.

and then during the POST we get the BIOS beep code of One Long and Two Short beeps and then nothing. Black screen, all lights still on, pwr light on etc.

I've searched this and other forums and discovered that that beep code means a Display Adaptor Problem. I thought that connecting a stand alone monitor might bypass that and get it to boot into safe mode at least, but... no joy. Didn't make a difference.

I re-seated the two RAM modules and tried to boot with each one seperately. No luck there either.

I'm trying to find out from my auntie if they still have the warrantee from the store but they are very un-orginised.

(I just noticed that it won't even give a spark of life without the power lead in. Perhaps the battery is bad as well. This was an existing problem, my cousin says.)

Does anyone know if this is fixable or can I replace the display adaptor?

What do you recommend as course of action in this case?

Thanks very much, I reall appreciate any help you can provide

-Robert

I just did a quick search & that beep code does appear to mean a problem with the display adapter (aka video card). But since the "card" is integrated into the motherboard, the only way to fix it would be to have the entire board replaced. If the laptop isn't under warranty, it would probably be more cost effective to just replace the laptop.

EDIT: have a look at this:

Thanks jam, I feared that was the case. I think they paid quite a bit of money for this machine. It's not gonna make 'em happy to have to buy another.

I'll look into the mobo replacement cost i think.

That is an interesting site you linked, unfortunately their notebook isn't covered by that.

Thanks very much for the help.

Just because your Laptop does not seem to fit what was listed in the link doesn't mean it's not covered.

The symptoms you described fit exactly into the problems Listed as covered, and your basic Laptop Model Hp DV 6000 is in the same series.

I would contact HP support and have them tell you that it is not covered. They may not be aware of every Model affected under this issue. If you don't try you could miss out on getting your Laptop repaired free.

If you don't tell them there's a problem, they'll never know.

Nothing to loose.

Step 2: Identify the symptoms
If your computer’s product number is listed above, and the notebook PC experiences one or more of the symptoms listed below, contact HP during the Duration of the HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement to determine whether you are eligible for a free repair.

The following symptoms apply to the dv6000, dv9000 and v6000 series notebooks:
The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager.
There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.********************************
The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.
The notebook does not start.*********************
The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery is installed and the AC adapter is connected.
The notebook issues a single beep during boot indicating no power.
The external monitor functions but there is no image on the notebook LCD panel.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Dumbob, fantastic advice. I called my auntie to get her on the job and she informs me that she's found her extended warrentee from the shop, valid till 2010.

So, I wonder why she asked me to fix it if she has it warrenteed - whatever. She can get onto them or HP I suppose.

Thanks for the help guys. I think we may have it sorted now. I'll keep you informed as to whether she goes through HP themselves.

Thanks

-Robert
