A little question first:
-how long does data stay on a harddrive before it starts to deteriorate

Next question:
-looking to buy a DVD Burner(dual layer)and wondering what exactly should I be looking for and what program is the best and easiest to use for full lenth movies?

The simple answer is: as long as you are likely to need it. Which means if you have any data you need to keep for long term storage, don't leave it on a hard disk, put it on a CD of DVD. There are to many things that can go wrong with hard disk and its no simple matter to take platters out and put them in another drive. With a CD DVD this is straight forward.

The estimated life span is a CD is about 100 years. But for obvious reasons, that is only an estimate.

As for you second question what kind of programme. One of the best CD/DVD burners is Nero. For video editing, its a matter of how much you want to spend. You can get a descent video editing package for a few dollars, or you can go up to the full processional standard costing thousands and everything in between. Some research with Google will give you some idea.

Stuart

I `think' jtros402 meant a dual layer burner drive. I haven't seen anything about a dual layer drive available for the public. I would sure be interested in one if they `are' available.

I am not aware of any dual layer DVD burners being available for PCs at this time. 12x burners are just starting to come on line. I recommend you buy a drive that can burn both DVD -/+ formats.

Here are a couple of the dual layer recorders available now:

Sony DRU-700A
NEC ND-2510A

There should be more released this month.
