Subject: XFX 7950 GX2 problemOS: WinXP SP2CPU/Ram: 3.4 4mb / 1024 DDR2Model/Manufacturer: INTEL 945G |
Comment: Hi I recently purchased the XFX 7950 GX2 VGA card and got myself a whole new system to suit this beast. see details below for my system. Motherboard : Intel 945G. PSU : 400 W CPU : Intel Pentium D 3.4 2MB Cache. RAM : AM1 1024 DDR2 533 HDD : Hitachi 500 GB SATA now when I inserted the VGA card in the PCIex slot it did not work at all. So I used the integrated VGA card to install windows and all the drivers and nothing was detected for the XFX 7950 GX2 on windows it didnt even show at all. I figured that my botherboard is not compatable with the VGA card so I got the Intel 965G same problem windows logs on and doesnt even detect any new hardware or an unidentified hardware. tried also below boards on other systems Intel 915g Intel 102 WinFast C51GM03 same problem but the power is in the VGA card and all is okay. what could this possibly be? should I just go ahead and purchase the very expensive intel board the 975X?? Regards, AJ

Reply: (edit)You may want to check that the actual graphics card is good. It seems that if its been tested with alot of different motherboards and didnt work in any it is likely to be the card. Do you have an adequate power supply? For a system like that a high quality 550W PSU would be needed. Note the 'High Quality' bit, people tend to buy any old PSU and think its fine because it has plenty of watts. You are going to need plenty of juice to run a 7950GX2.. I know you have already made the purchase on your processor but I have some bad news for ya.. An Intel Core 2 Duo would have been a much better choice than the Pentium D. Core 2 Duo's are superior compared to the P4's and the performance to MHZ is quite astounding compared to the P4's. Reply: (edit)Did you forgot to plug in the power plug into the 7950GX2? If that 400 watt power supply is el-cheapo and does not have more than 27a on the 12v rail, you are going to run into problems like stability in games and not able to get video signal... My suggestion is to buy a better power supply ones with >27a on the 12v rail/s and see if that works. Final comment is having a 945g/965g/915g on a 7950gx2 is kinda a waste due to limited BIOS function. You could of gone for the 965PE/945P/915P... No, I'm saying you could of gone for the 915P/945P/965PE series before you purchased the 915/945/965g. If you can't return them and get money back, then there is no point getting them. As far as power supply goes, if your power supply DOES NOT HAVE MORE THAN 27A on your 12v rail/s, THEN THE CARD WILL NOT WORK!!!! http://www.techpowerup.com/printrev... "While the manufacturing process and the die has remained the same, the GeForce 7950GX2 GPUs run at the specification using a lower voltage than single GPU configurations. The results are 143W peak power consumption for the GeForce 7950GX2 compared to 95W for a GeForce 7900GTX and 125W for a Radeon X1900XTX. The minimum PSU requirement has been raised from 22A on 12V of the GeForce 7900GTX to 27A on 12V for the GeForce 7950GX2." Reply: (edit)I would reccommend either the E6400 or the E6600, they are both exellent processors. E6400: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... E6600: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produ... I agree with TMP-Man, a motherboard with a 965PE/945P/915P chipset would be a better choice. Also I should mention, if you decide to get a Core 2 Duo processor it wont work on a 915 chipset. Well I dont think it will anyway, but you should aim at the newest chipsets as they offer better performance/features. Also sice you are using 9XXg chipsets that have onboard graphics, that could be the problem. Can you disable the onboard graphics in the bios? You seem to be spending a crap load of money, buying a 7950GX2 and then multiple motherboards, now possibly another CPU. See if you can return some of those motherboards you arent using. If you cant get this thing going you may be better off taking it into a shop to get it working for ya instead of buying another set of motherboards.. heh. Reply: (edit)Hmm, Ill give you a list of good brands that I know of: Antec, Cooler master, Thermaltake, Sparkle, Ernermax.. and probably others I am forgetting. With a graphics card like that you are going to want a very good PSU, a good brand power supply at 550W should be fine. Usually you should go for a dual 12V line with about 18A on each 12V rail.
