Good deal while it's on sale.

Capt: thank you for the article. i read it and wrote down what they used, but im kindof on a budget right now and cant really afford anything over 1000. i know that makes it harder to get the right computer, but thank you so much, ill difently look into it and if you have any thing else that might be helpful or another article or something, please write....
HeroPshyco: is the power supply the only thing wrong with it? i looked at the one you showed me. it doesnt look tobad, dont know anything about computer though...lol. if you have any other suggestions, like anything else i might need, a monitor or something, please wrrite....

You can get the "backbone" for your PC for about $600. If you're in the US, I suggest shopping online at Newegg.com
Here's some rough estimates:
Athlon 64 socket 939 (retail) = $150-200
nForce4 motherboard = $125
2 x 512MB PC3200 = $125
power supply = $50
6600 PCI-E video card = $125I see no reason to get a CD burner AND a DVD-ROM. Why not just get a single DVD burner? It'll handle ALL the duties, probably cost less, & will cut down on the power load.
And you really don't need to get a soundcard...most boards have onboard sound. If you're not happy with it, you can always add a card later. Take the money you save from the soundcard & optical drive & put it toward something else, like a better board or better CPU.

I also should have steered you away from the Raptor hard drive. It is a fast hard drive, don't get me wrong, but consider the fact you can get a 250 gig hitachi for less. Most people wouldn't even notice the speed difference of a raptor compared to a good quality SATA like a Seagate or Hitachi. But if you have specific needs, by all means.
The sound card, sorta your choice. It depends on what you want to do with the PC. If you have specific needs, go for it.
If you want an LCD monitor, this is a REALLY good deal...

"I see no reason to get a CD burner AND a DVD-ROM. Why not just get a single DVD burner?"
There are reasons to do this. Maybe he wants to copy CD's a lot. Maybe he wants to watch a DVD movie while running an app requiring a CD. But I agree, if you don't have special needs, one drive would be fine.

Amd 64 3000 msi neo2 platinium 1gig ddr 400

yea, i live in the us. was looking at newegg heard they were really good. a couple friends have used them. thank you for all the help

Umm, that's an onboard SB Live, NOT an Audigy. Big difference!
"...but in my defense, it was dark, I was drunk, and it was delicious!"

"check out msi's neo4 sli.has onboard audigy2 sound"
That statement was misleading because the SB Live is two prior generations of soundcards behind the Audigy 2's. While Live's aren't bad, it's simply NOT Audigy 2 caliber.

A DVD burner can read & write DVDs, plus it can read & write CDs. It's really an all-in-one unit. I just bought a 16X dual layer DVD burner yesterday for $39!
