Hello, I was wondering if someone could give me some addvice, I had a dell p4 2.8g with 120g WD drive and 1g ram, it was lagging when i Played wow so i heard that AMD's are better for gaming. ( proven by i build my son a AMD 64 setup (Biostar motherboard and the Socket 743) and his is running awesome, he is running windows xp pro 32bit but runns good) Now after i seen all that i figured I would get me one and it should cure my problems. No!!! I used my old harddrive when i got the new system and come to find out still lag. (Btw i bought a barebone system from a local retailer came with motherboard CPU 256mb memory powersuply and case, I added 512mb memory and new PCI 16 Video Card 128mb.) So i figured it had to be the hard drive cause everything else was new. So i went and got me a SATA II 250g WD hard drive. And yet still lag. So if there is something that I am missing or something I nedd to do that somone else can think of your advice would be great. Btw i had Windows XP home on my pc when i started this venture i downloaded the trial version of x64 XP thinking it need a 64 bit OS but nope thats not the problem. Ok I'll leave it at this and see if anyone can help.
Thanks Again
CJW

It would help if you listed your specs. Apparently you have a VIA based board? An nForce4 would have been a better choice. 768MB DDR400? Is it detected as running in dual channel mode or not? Tell us about the power supply (brand, wattage, amperage on the +12v rails) & also tell us about that video card. Did you format & do a fresh install of WinXP on the old HDD? I wouldn't advise running x64 XP due to driver issues...it is getting better though.

Here goes...

Power Supply = Fortrex ST-400W
Voltage - 115V~ / 230V~
Current - 6/4A For 250W
10/6A For 400W
8/4A for 300W,350W
Frequency - 60~50Hz

Video Card = Asus En7300GS
PCI Express 128MB DDR2
NVidia GeForce7300gs

Yes i reformated and Fresh installed XP home on old hard drive. But i have reformated that hard drive probably about 45 times so i figured it was time fro a new one.

You didn't answer all of my questions but I'll do the best I can.

I'm not familiar with Fortrex PSUs but I did some searching & found that the ST-400W sells for $16? My advice is to replace it ASAP with a name brand unit! And plan on spending at least $50.

The 7300GS is a weak gaming card that uses a 64-bit memory interface. It will definitely struggle with high detail settings at high resolutions. Best to keep the AA/AF turned off, the resolution & detail settings low (possibly medium).

XP Pro x64 is probably not the best choice for an OS. I suggest you stick with WinXP (32-bit).

Nothing useful about your memory above, but my guess is that you're running it in single channel mode rather than dual channel?

" i have reformated that hard drive probably about 45 times"

Why would you have to do that? I've been running the same HDD for at least 2 years & it's only been formatted once (the day I installed it).

Internet connection??? its gonna lag on dial up or 256 broadband wireless with average connection.. i would atleast recommend at least 512.. i have 1.5mb and every now and then i lag a bit...

Nobody has stated this and i think it may be the problem. and your 1st machine should have been fine
