Anybody know if the Windows Vista OS is capable of Steam Games [such as CS:S/CS:CZ/CS1.6/HL2/TFC/HL/DOD:S/i'm a noob] or anything like BF2 maybe? I was surfing the web for that but couldn't find anything amazingly. And www.newegg.com has Windows Vista available now for a cheap pricetag [$110] for the home basic version, and that's why i'm wondering.
Anybody have a link?
I like chicken.

Jam is right the gameplay on Vista is slower in preformance for the most part then on XP.
Hopefully MS will come out with a directX 10 version for XP within the next 6 months, then there will really be no need to upgrade at all to Vista to run directX 10

Why would MS do that? They WANT users to upgrade to Vista!
My Super P3:
Pentium III-S 1.4GHz @ 1.58GHz, 512K L2
X800XT All-in-wonder, overclocked to 580/600.

2 gigs of PC2100 RAM
QDI Advance 12 mobo, this baby rocks!
SB Audigy 2

Its the same problem with a WindowsXP last time when they asked us to upgrade from Windows98 to XP. Ahhhh DEJA VU...What's wrong with Microsoft sigh.
"Why would MS do that? They WANT users to upgrade to Vista!"
I think there MAY be a possibility. Fingers crossed...:) Last time DirectX for XP can still be run on 98, at least until most games were XP only.

Why? because they are going to pretty much have to after extending XP's support until now April 2009.
I mean MS history shows that they will support it in time, based on how other older OSes got the latest Direct X updates before their support was dropped. And from what I was reading, don't be surpised if DirectX 10 is bundled in with Windows XP SP3, which will prob be the last SP of Windows XP.AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz

First off, DirectX 10 will NOT be available for XP. It is only supported under Vista.
Second, today's current games will run slower on Vista then XP. But, here's why: There is next to no support for OpenGL in Vista. Microsoft has left this up to the hardware vendors.
Third, Vista is a good, solid OS. It has taken the stability of XP and built upon it to make it more user friendly. However, applications will run slower. Reason being, hardware vendors need to get their act together and write drivers that will utilize what MS has put in Vista.
Finally, I have to give props to Microsoft for their Release Candidates and Beta testing for Vista. They have tested the OS more then any other OS they've released previously. You would think that throughout all this beta testing and such, hardware vendors, and software vendors for that matter, would have been better prepared for the launch. I suppose 3 years isn't enough time for them to write new drivers.
Something to think about: Hardware, memory, graphics cards, processors, etc are only going to be getting faster. With the IT slump over the last few years, manufacturers haven't had to make faster processors as quickly as they used to. But, with Vista, Microsoft is pushing them to release faster and better hardware. It's really not Microsoft that is at fault for slowing apps down; I put the blame of hardware vendors and their driver support for Vista.

"First off, DirectX 10 will NOT be available for XP. It is only supported under Vista."
That is correct. Microsoft has said vehemently DX10 will be Vista only, and will NOT be available for XP.
"Second, today's current games will run slower on Vista then XP. But, here's why: There is next to no support for OpenGL in Vista. Microsoft has left this up to the hardware vendors."
Not exactly true. OpenGL can run within Vista.

However, OpenGL will be disadvantaged in performance than DX/D3D. The reason is in XP, the 2D normal Windows environment was something called GDI. OpenGL and D3D were invoked on an as needed basis. They were effectively separate entities and subsystems from the normal GUI engine. This is why for example it's hard to alt+tab out of a game, your screen blinks, etc. in addition to the fact your resolution may be different in your game than your desktop, etc.
In Vista, the entire GUI is DirectX/Direct3D. GDI aside from a shim that runs on top of D3D for backwards compatibility is GONE. D3D therefore is ALWAYS running. So when you run a D3D game, you're not running a second graphics subsystem anymore. However, when you run OpenGL, you will also be running D3D components for the GUI that's still in memory, even if not visible.
Since D3D is heavier than GDI, this effectively boosts D3D performance in games since it won't have to run GDI, too. But for OpenGL games, it reduces performance because now, it must run OpenGL and D3D instead of the lighter GDI in XP.
Before people see this and throw an anti-Microsoft rant about them screwing OpenGL, remember that GDI has had several critical and widely exploited security holes, not to mention having limitations preventing some of the new GUI visual enhancements available only in Vista. Also, the vast majority of games are D3D, not OpenGL. Sorry, but GDI had to go!
