I have read many articles regarding SLi and there is no doubt that it will have much benefit down the road.

However, I have to question how it will be valued as a needed technology. I know that more games will utilize it correctly. But is it going to make that much of a difference in running SLi'd cards vs. one high end card? I'm sure the benchmarks scores, blah, blah, blah, will be higher, but in terms of performance I have to believe that it will be overkill.

What do you all think?

There already is a difference with FEAR.

However, I just don't think it will be necessary. It's simply too costly with the extra juice needed in the power supply, possible additional cooling, not to mention the added cost on the motherboard and cards themselves.

So, in other words, you believe that this will be a "hobby" type of tech rather then a mainstream one?

If so,I agree with you, I don't see this technology being commericially relevant. I do see it being used in pissing matches between friends though. :)

I have a feeling that GPU's will be Dual core, much like CPU's are becoming before the full advantage of SLi is used to its potential.

The cost benifit is null, and really the High end cards are doing the job for much if not all games available to us now.

To speak on the pissing match - its definitley a bragging right.

Yeah, I'm happy because when I finally put together my new system I am not going to add the extra cost of a SLi board unless the price is on the cheap.

On an off note... Why in the hell can't I get rid of my sig line? I obviously didn't put it there and when I delete it, it comes right back!

There are already a couple of SLI video cards with two GPUs on the same card! SO, I agree with pr3d. Had the processor market not been moving to multi-core processors, then an SLI/Crossfire configuration *might* be necessary in the future. But the video card industry will benefit greatly from the R&D that has already been done within the processor market making it more advantageous to go dual GPU instead of dual video card.

Having said that there are still other hurdles regardless of architecture used - power and heat as noted above. The ASUS card with two 7800GT GPUs actually has an external power supply. Interesting concept as you don't have to worry about having a really beefy PSU for the system. But, I sure as hell don't want moer and more cables connected to my PC. I think the next big invention should be wireless power!

As far as pissing contests and bragging rights go, people can get in that stuff as much as they want. I just point out how much money they're wasting and laugh hysterically.
