I am currently thinking about upgrading my PC. My specs are:
Amd 3700 (2.2ghz) overclocked to 2.75ghz
1tb harddrive
2gb DDR
X-Fi extreme sound card
7900Gt/GTO
Asus motherboard with PCI express 16x, SLINow my question involves the CPU. Will my CPU be able to handle a gtx260 or even a gtx280 and not bottleneck it, as well as current games such as Crysis, or Gta 4 on high settings. I overclocked it to 2.75ghz and it has been cool, and stable at that speed and at 1.5 volts.
Its just if I have to upgrade everything else, it would involve a new Motherboard, CPU, ram, and it would get very expensive. Instead of spending $250, it would be more like $600. So I figured I'd ask the forum since I am really not sure.
dude, that processor is like a 4 year old proc that costs less than $50 bucks brand new. it's probably bottle-necking your system now but i don't know AMD processors too indepth in comparison with intel.
here's my justification:
i previously owned a computer with a 7900GT (same as you) and a pent 3.2GHz proc. I'd play CS:S with everything maxed out and it going up high but always drops... it does the same thing even when the settings were low. since then i bought a whole new computer and i have a 3.0 OCed to 3.6 (intel) and a gtx260. the thing is that that game isnt that graphic intensive but having a slow computer running it just doesnt work.
lets go like this. you let us know what game you want to play and we'll tell you if you need to upgrade. if you want to play Left 4 Dead, FAT CHANCE, tf2? doubt it, css maybe, wow easily

Okay, um... I want to be able to play
GTA 4, Crysis, Gears, Far Cry 2 all on high. And im wondering if I could get very good frame rates. With the GTX it is possible, but yea, that proccesor issue...

I could have sworn that I replied to this...I guess I forgot to click "confirm post".
In response to FBI Agent's comment, the P4 sucked for gaming. The A64 owned it...especially an A64 3700+ overclocked to 2.75GHz. Your comments are of little help.
Chris (aka warmaster08876), even though the 3700+ is/was a great CPU, it's pretty outdated by modern standards. S939, single core, DDR400...it will definitely bottleneck a GTX260/280. As for your desire to "be able to play GTA 4, Crysis, Gears, Far Cry 2 all on high", it ain't gonna happen. Even top of the line systems with the latest/greatest hardware struggle with Crysis. Have a look at this chart:

Thats pretty crazy, its almost like you spend all that money and it still isn't perfect. Ty Jam, I guess I will have to consider getting that Cpu Upgrade and Mobo. Any suggestions? I was looking at the I7's but there too much. Even the mobo is a lot. I am considering getting one of the Intel core 2 quad processors. Possibly the q9300. This hopefully combined with some overclocking and a gtx260 or 280 should last me a while.
