Subject: Why Doesn't My Anti-Aliasing Work? OS: Windows XP Pro CPU/Ram: P4 2.8E / 1G PC-3500

Comment: Ok, well, my Anti-Aliasing doesn't work, heh. It used to work fine for the past week or two that I've had this computer. See, I just built this thing, and I absolutely love it, but now the AA doesn't work at all, no matter what I try to do to make it work. AA worked fine, but now it won't. I think it had something to do with a windows update that downloaded nVidia drivers to my computer and installed them without telling me, since that's apparently the default setting for WinXP Pro. I checked the windows update page and saw my download history and the drivers were from October 2003. So I said "why is this an update if I downloaded newer drivers a week ago???" and got angry. So what I proceeded to do was uninstall all the nVidida drivers I could find in Add/Remove Programs, which didn't work, by the way. Then I uninstalled the video card, a GeForce FX 5900SE, and reinstalled it with newly downloaded drivers from nVidia. Nothing, nothing has worked at all. I did get a strange performance increase, but still... Speaking of performance, right after I got the so called "updated" drivers from windows update, I noticed that certain high res textures would slow my framerates down to 1 to 5 FPS even if I was doing 80 FPS just a screen away. I noticed this in Unreal Tournement 2004 and in one scene of Halo. Oh, and besides Anti-Aliasing not working, Anisitropic Filtering doesn't work either. All settings on each image quality feature does absolutely nothing. So, if anyone knows what's up with my little annoyance of a problem, please help. I'd greatly appreciate it. No anti-aliasing is bad for Splinter Cell =( among other things...

Reply: (edit)After you uninstall the drivers try using a Driver CLeaner. or if you dont want to do that just delete the whole nvidia folder. Abit IS7 865PE Pentium 4 2.6ghz @ 3.2ghz eVGA GeForce FX 5900 SE

Reply: (edit)"After you uninstall the drivers try using a Driver CLeaner. or if you dont want to do that just delete the whole nvidia folder." Didn't work =\ After I did all that I got fed up and restored the computer back a week to see if it would clear up by itself... well it didn't... and now I'm starting to suspect that something in my hardware popped or decided to not work... so I'm gonna start unplugging things off my motherboard tomarrow and see if that does anything. I'll try installing an older video card, installing all of it's drivers, and then removing it, replacing it with my current one. I've done that before to clear up a completely unrelated problem, but maybe it'll help me here. I'll post a follow up tomarrow. Thanks for the advice, and the cool program =)

Reply: (edit)Might be with the registry. If your video card *popped* or *decided not to work* the first signs you'll see are major artifacting.. Abit IS7 865PE Pentium 4 2.6ghz @ 3.2ghz eVGA GeForce FX 5900 SE

Reply: (edit)Is your system restore running? If it's running, try going back a month or two. Oh, one more thing, don't get your downloads from windows updates, they are f!@#$%^ crap. Download the drivers from their respective sites. Hope that helps. Expert™

Reply: (edit) Well guys, here's something really weird and interesting. Doesn't make too much sense, but apparently my problem lies with a game called Splinter Cell. How it's preventing me from having Anti-Aliasing is friggin beyond me, but here's what I did: I put in an old Winfast GeForce 4 MX into this computer, booted up, uninstall old drivers, rebooted, installed newly downloaded nVidia drivers, rebooted. Then I checked a game called Guild Wars to see if my AA was working (had it set to 4XS), and it was. I said, "Well, crap, I must have a bum vid card or something then," and went to check Splinter Cell for AA. I double clicked the Icon only to have it start up one of the first intro movies and come back with fault errors that ended my gaming session the night before. So I uninstalled and reinstalled Splinter Cell, turned it on, and got no AA. So then I said, "well crap, maybe Splinter Cell doesn't have AA?" and then I went back and turned on Guild Wars to see if the title screen showed any AA. I got none... no anti-aliasing on any setting. By this time I was kind of getting pissed off and hoped that by putting the new card in again, repeating the same process detailed before, that it might give me AA for a while and shut off like it did with this old card, then maybe I could go to Intel's motherboard support site and say "What the hell?" to them. I put in the newer card again and check Guild Wars, but got no AA on any setting. So I went online and searched for "Splinter Cell" and "Anti-Aliasing" on google. What I got back was that: A)Splinter Cell doesn't work with Anti-Aliasing at all, as in, won't even start up. B)Splinter Cell will run with Anti-Aliasing, but won't Anti-Alias anything. C)Splinter Cell gives crazy graphical glitches and reduces performance with AA on without giving any of the AA quality, like B above only worse. D)Splinter Cell can screw your computer up with AA, as well as other high quality options, and give a repeat performance of either B or C. Apparently I'm not the only one with this problem, but it sure as hell took forever to find out what it was that was causing the damn problem. Who would think that a damn game would cause AA to stop functioning entirely? Doesn't make sense in the least, but I'm betting that after I uninstall Splinter Cell for good, as well as reinstall the latest video drivers, that I'll have Anti-Aliasing back in other games. If anyone can confirm my problem I'd appreciate it, confirmation besides the stuff I've read on random review/benchmark/help pages. If anyone here has Splinter Cell and would check this out for me I'd be greatful for that as well. Thanks anyway.
