Hi all,
I'm thinking of getting a new Video card given that the one i've got now isn't up to it on Far cry(ATI9200,though doom3 works fine!)but its all a bit confusing.Like how does a 9600XT compare with a basic 9800, or which Nvidea based one is equiv. Basically i need help.Which one should I get given the following.
$200-$250 Budget.
I dont want to start messing with fancy power supplies and such.Thanks.
Davie.
So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Douglas Adams.

The best card you can get in that price range is Radeon 9800 pro.

Its out of stock, should be back in stock in about a weekIf you can stretch a little bit more for 270$ you can get a much better card a Geforce 6800. But you MAY run into problems with your PSU

Athlon XP 2100+ @2.0ghz 400fsb

Geforce 6800

See the benchies.-- Always do what you are afraid to do --

I am also addicted to FC,BF1942,CS,HL2,DOOM3
and he's right if your stuck in that price range under $250 get a 9800 PRO but you will be much wiser to save a little more and get the Nvidia 6800GT though this definately requires an adequate power supply (<400w) and a descent 500w psu can be had for less than $60 on newegg.com
Its well worth the investment if your into games like I amenermax eg651p 550w psu
amd 3200 /aerocool 7+
gigabyte ga 7v400 pro2
1gig mushkin pc3200 2-2-2

1x wd 80gig se

Hi
just to add to above, ive just upgraded, so had same thoughts as 'dmacdoul', have ended up with a cracking card, 6600gt agp 128 meg, for same price as 9800 pro.
£156, not sure what they retail for stateside.read about it here;

, bought the xfx version, suprisngly at 1024 resolution it gives the 6800 a run for its money. just run 3dmark good results& plays games great.regards

what the best cost solution thing to do is get a ati 9800 and if it has certain ram you can get a firmware update to make it a 9800 pro.
heres the guide on how to

All,
Thanks for the suggestions, i'm still confused but starting to edge towards a 9800PRO card as they seem to be about the best value. How long will I get from opne of these before I need to upgrade again? So long, and thanks for all the fish!
Douglas Adams.

I HIGHLY advise you to not follow the suggestion made by northernp to softmod (which is what he is suggesting is called) a 9800 to a 9800 pro. While some people have had good results with it, softmodding can PERMENENTLY render a video card useless (unless you want to swap out the BIOS chip - that isn't fun). I would definitely go with the 9800 Pro. They are cheap and perform very well.
This card however is NOT top of the line and you may in the future find that you'll need to upgrade. But unfortunatley technology moves faster than anyone can keep up with and hoping to get ahead of the game is pointless. I have a 9800 Pro and with my system can play HL2 and CS: S with no problems (granted, not on the top settings but nevertheless).
