Comment:

I recently purchase a new Compaq Presario Desktop (3100amd processor, 512MB memory, 160 GB hard drive). The Graphics card that came with it was the SiS 760 and i was wanting to play games such as Battlefield 2 and Half Life 2 and was wondering if my current graphics card would be sufficient or if i would need another one and if so which one?
Thanks.

Before purchase, suggest you look at either a1130n or emachines t6522 at circuit city as they have pci-express gfx slot and are fairly decent machines. But if you want to stick with your choice, highly suggest psu upgrade prior to gfx upgrade. Not sure if hp's psu/mobo are propritary anymore, so might not be possible. Get Nvidia because of shader model 3.0 support and 6600gt, is the lowest i'd go. Costs $169 for evga version at newegg.com. It requires at least 350watt psu. Look at the +12V rail when picking psu. 18A is bare minimum.

Also if your going to be playing Battlefield 2 then your going to need more memory, atleast another stick of 512. word is 2 gig is best for stable performance although 1 gig will do but won't allow for highest settings.

!Hmm!

If it's the Athlon XP type Sempron, I don't see a whole lot of point getting a 6600GT. I'd look at a plain 6600 because the Sempron Socket A style CPU won't feed the 6600GT well enough to make it worth it.

If the power supply is proprietary, you should pursue getting a less powerful graphics card unless you want to pony up for either a new case and power supply, or a power supply that will fit that system. If you want to avoid that, I would go for a Radeon 9600 XT.

And I'd agree - you're gonna need some RAM, too. Don't know about going to 2 gigs though on your system. Again, your CPU won't allow you to run the highest detail anyway.

BTW, this isn't a laptop, is it?

2 gigs of RAM is unnecessary and will only provide a slight difference in performance. Go with 1 gig. get a nice 6600, the GT model will probably be bottlenecked. Hell, the 6600 might even be bottlenecked so you have plenty of room to upgrade later.

Build-in-Progress:
NZXT Nemesis Elite
Athlon 64 3200
Abit An8
OCZ EL PE Rev2 DDR400
X800PRO flash to 800XT PE
A-TOP ATX12V 500W PSU
