They're pretty closely matched, but if you look at these, you'll see that the 9600XT tests a slightly better

jam, I think your eyes are upide down. The 5700U was above the 9600XT 7/10 (7/9 if you don't count numbered benches like Aquamark, I don't trust those benches) of those benches (I am not counting quality because the FPSs were too low to play a decent game at. Even then, the 5700U was up in half of them.)
I like Nvidia because their drivers are better and they overclock easier. Go with the 5700U, its better.

NVIDIA does poorly in the benchmarks, but always does much better in the FPS in games, and RADEON smokes it in the benchmarks. But benchmarks mean nothing, its the game experience. Go for NVIDIA look for the FPS on game tests: NVIDIA wins

Nvidia
but if Nvidia and ATi are both the same price then I go for ATi

eVGA GeForce FX 5900 SE

for a few dollars more, say $10 to $20 you can get the fx5900xt or se.there alot better performers with 256bit memory interface and 8 pixel pipelines or for $30 more or less you could get a 9800pro...it's a no brainer!!!
I just got the gainward fx 5900xt 450c/780m from newegg for $195,man this card ROCKS!!!

I got mines for $189 at Newegg with a free bundle of Call of duty and I got 6100 in 03 and 16400 in 01 ;)

when it comes down to it, either of them 2 cards u get are good cards and not much difference between.
The nvidia mite perform a bit better in one game and the radeon in another. They are both good cards so whichever one is cheaper i wud go for. :)

ir_mudd,
You're right, I don't know what I was thinking....hmmmm, what's 11:05 Pacific wher I am? Maybe I was 1/2 asleep...lol.
The two cards are closely matched though. Many of those benchtests are too close to call...a couple FPS difference isn't gonna be noticeable. But the FX5700U does tests slightly better...sorry about that

Fx5700U does slightly better in DirectX 8 and OGL. DirectX 9 is good too but on games like Halo, FarCry its a few fps behind the 9600 XT.
Still, its way better than a Fx5600
