There aren't a lot of boards that except 4GB sticks...are you sure it's what you need? Also, you didn't bother to say which type of RAM you're looking for: desktop or laptop, SDR, DDR, DDR2, DDR3 & which speed it runs at.
And don't forget, 4GB is the max limit for any 32-bit OS, but only 3.5GB (or less) will actually being recognized.

yeah, i need ddr2, and it said maximum 16 gb ram but didnt
say how many slots
if it helps this is the motherboardhttp://www.ebuyer.com/product/140701

Make sure you understand what I wrote above. If you're going to run the 32-bit version of XP or Vista, they will NOT recognize more than 3.5GB. Even if you install 16GB, the system will only use 3.5GB, so hopefully you know what you're doing. And obviously, you can't run in dual channel mode if you only have a single stick.
Why that board anyway? It has a good northbridge but an old southbridge. See if you can find one that uses the SB700 or better yet, the SB750. The Gigabyte GA-MA790X-UD4P would be a better choice.
Here's some RAM...it's very pricey, plus it's ECC. It's not performance RAM, it's more for server use, but that's what you're gonna get with sticks that size.

okay i guess i need 2 sticks then?
and yes i am going to run 64 bit as of last few questions,
that motherboard looks very good and only 20 quid more, how
can i get 16gb on that?Custom Built PC

Like I said, 4GB sticks are expensive! And if you're going to run a Phenom, you should be getting DDR2-1066, not DDR2-800...that will drive the cost up even more. What are you going to use the system for that would require 16GB RAM?

i want a quick pc, for gaming aswell, ram helps speed doesnt
it?
i also use a lot of programsand what about this will it work?

"i want a quick pc, for gaming aswell, ram helps speed doesnt it?"
If you only need 4GB RAM, installing 16GB won't make your system any faster....you'd just be wasting your money.
"and what about this will it work?"
That's DDR2-667 which is NOT what you need. All it will do is bottleneck your system. If you're going to run an AMD X2 based on the Windsor or Brisbane (dual core), you need DDR2-800 for best performance. If you're going to run any of the Phenom based CPUs...X2 Kuma (dual core), X3 Toliman (triple core) or X4 Phenom (quad core), you should be running DDR2-1066.

so which one, my proccesor is an AMD athlon 64 i think

Your question was already answered above: "If you're going to run an AMD X2 based on the Windsor or Brisbane (dual core), you need DDR2-800"
