Comment: What's the best PCI GPU for <$200? I don't have any PCI-E or AGP slots and it seems like the selection of PCI videocards is limited. I play HALO in safe mode and Battlefield Vietnam with my Intel x-treme integrated video and it's torture. If you could suggest the best cheap GPU for a PCI slot it would be an awesome help. Thanks!

Reply: (edit)mmm... could you post all your system specs? You don't wanna use 200 bucks on a pci videocard (if there are any at that price). With 200 bucks you can get a descent pci-express or agp card PLUS a "descent" pci-express or agp mobo. PCI cards are bad and choices are slim, and with 200 bucks you can make a much better upgrade than that. But of course it depends on your processor, ram, and everything so please post all your system specs so we can give you better advice. Free

Reply: (edit)He's right. You could get the GeForce 6600gt right now with mobo that would support it for under $200.Go with the EVGA model.

Reply: (edit)The best PCI video card you're gonna find new is the FX5500 256MB/128-bit card. It goes for about $80-90 at newegg.com. There was an FX5700, but they're scarce...the FX5700LE is roughly the same as the FX5500. Just make sure to get one that uses 128-bit memory. A step down would be the FX5200 128MB/128-bit. There's really nothing better...the PCI format has dead-ended This space for rent

Reply: (edit)I have an HP a1020n. The specs are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/genericDocument?cc=us&docname=c00303942&lc=en and everything is still stock. If I'm going to upgrade more than a videocard (and I think I probably will) I could see spending $300 but not any more. I'm loaded on christmas money right now :). I was looking around the forums, newegg, and tigerdirect and from what I can tell PCI is long dead. If I'm going to upgrade I think I'll definitely go with something that has PCI-E.

Reply: (edit)yea, I might do that. Would that setup be able to play games like BF2 and AoE3 or would I need to do more upgrading/building of new system to get that kind of performance?

Reply: (edit)I'm thinking bout buying this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814127131 and another 512MB of RAM as a short term fix. Any suggestions on RAM or doesn't it make much difference?

Reply: (edit)That's an AGP card...I thought your board only has PCI slots? This one would be the one to get but it's currently out of stock: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814143032 Newegg has plenty of RAM to choose from. 512MB PC3200 CAS 2.5 goes for under $40 shipped. Reply: (edit)DON'T get a PCI card man. Really. You have a descent processor... and it's socket 774. There are CHEAP mobo's that support socket 774 and agp or pci express. Plug an extra 512 pc3200 ram, and a geforce 6600gt. You won't pass the 250 bucks and you'll have a very descent gaming machine. Free

Reply: (edit)I dont know much about mobos and what features I should be looking for. Could you suggest one? Also it would be super sweet if it was a micro-ATX formfactor, but if it's ATX I can always buy a new case cheap. Thanks!

Reply: (edit)Honestly I'm an AMD user and I know little about Intel mobo's... I don't know which chipset is the best... :( Ask around, look at newegg. Remember that it has to be socket 775, it has to support pc3200 ram, must have pci-express or agp. Free

Reply: (edit)You have an HP system...you can just install an "off the shelf" motherboard. HP's are proprietary. Just buy the cheap PCI card & more RAM & be done with...otherwise, sell your HP & buy a REAL computer This space for rent
