Subject: What's the best PCI card i can get?
OS: Windows XP
CPU/Ram: 2.6 Ghz Celeron/512 RAM
Model/Manufacturer: Radeon 9200 256 PCI
Comment:

current specs:
Windows XP SP2
Intel (R) Celeron (R)CPU 2.60 Ghz
512 DDR-SDRAM
Radeon 9200 256mb (PCI ) (made by VisionTek Xtasy)
250w power supply

don't know much about my mobo (other than it DOESN'T have an AGP slot ) so i ran the CPUZ program and here's the info it gives me :

Manufacturer: AUSTek Computer INC.
Model: P4G533LA - REV 1.xx
Chipset: Intel -i845GL Rev.B1
Southbridge: Intel -82801DB (ICH4)
Sensor: SMSC -8708

BIOS:
Brand:Award Software,Inc.
Version: 3.16
Date: 8/05/2003

i dont have the money to spend on a new mobo/processor/power supply AND graphics card, etc. so my question is what is the best nvidia PCI card that i could get that would be compatible with my system ,and how much of an fps difference would i see in games like Doom 3 and Sacred compared to the card that i'm using now? Doom 3 will run (shadows off ,low settings ) with the average of 18-20 fps (according to time demo) but it can get as low as 8-10 fps in some areas :(
i also only get about 10 fps playing Sacred while I'm in a town with lots of NPC's (same with morrowind).

is there a better PCI card i can get that will allow me to play these games with 25-30 fps without needing an entirely new PC?

Thanks for any help.

The best PCI card you can get is Geforce FX5500 128-bit memory... But comparing to R9200, it won't be much faster but just fully supports DX9 while r9200 does not... However, the FX series were never a great performer at pixel shader 2.0 games... Instead of upgrading the graphic, you should of think about upgrading your CPU, the Celeron Northwood series were never good performer at games... Link below...

Yup !!!

The 5500 is your best bet, unless you have one of those mysterious PCI2AGP converters. Even if you did, it would probably max out @ PCI speeds anyways, which was most likely the reason it never became mainstream.

Unless other things like, voltage signal and memory bus-width had something to do with it's rare availability.

All you need is a new MB, don't worry about power. My P4 2.8/768Mb/6600GT uses 164W when running on full with 3 monitors! (17" TFTs), so a 250W supply will be ok. Look on ebay for a socket 478 motherboard or in a clearance of your favourite supplier, I've just seen one for £25! You can swap all your bits onto it and get a PNY 6600GT for £93.
Oh, I found out my power consumption through PowerChute

can someone link me to a cheap motherboard with an AGP slot that will work with my system ?Are new motherboards easy to install ?

the PCI cards i've been looking at seem to be more expensive than a lot of the faster AGP cards. why is that?

sorry for the stupid questions (yes,i'm an idiot when it comes to hardware but i'm learning .i just have to get some better performance and this PCI crap ain't cutting it)

btw thanks for all the replies/links :)

quick question jhunt303, i read on newegg or somewhere that a bfg geforce 6200 (and it was PCI card) requires a 300w power supply (i have 250w) so how can i run a 6600 AGP with a 250w? (im just asking because i dont know about these things)

if i bought a cheap mobo with AGP and a 6600 will the crappy celeron and power supply be able to handle it? i dont know about overclocking , but i am willing to learn .if i can get at least 30 fps on doom 3 with 800 x 600 res,WITH shadows, then i'll be happy :)
