Right before Spore came out there was all this hype that it was going to be a paradigm shifting game that would change so much of how we think about gaming. Lately I don't hear anything about it? Was it sort of a disappointment?

i had the same reaction i have to most Will Wright games: i was heavily addicted for less than 72 hours.
what bothered me most was that the game felt like someone took his last 5 games and used chewing gum and masking tape to stick them together. and what you do in a previous "stage" has little to no impact on how you will play the next.

Yeah, major disappointment. Huge potential but there was little game play for each stage. Space stage is kind of neat until you get a message every two minutes informing you you're planets are getting raided.
