is this a good LCD monitor for gaming/graphics/video editing?
ViewSonic VA902b 19" LCD (Black) 8ms 550:1 270cd/m2 1280x1024
i mean i know it doesn't have DVI input but do i really need it? I dunno i kinda would like to get viewsonic since i never used their products before. Or is 550:1 contrast too little or not enough to get good gaming performance in DOOM 3 and HALF LIFE 2 and the like?
P4 D - 2.66GHz
1024MB DDR2 RAM
ASUS A8N-SLI Motherboard
Gigabyte Nvidia Geforce 6800 Ultra 256MB PCI-E
Creative SoundBlaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum
2x Western Digital Raptor 74GB

The contrast ratio makes me hesitant. That's not gonna have very good coloring. This monitor isn't bad, but I think you could do better.
"How many squirrels had to die to make you look fly?!"

I have this monitor and it runs well... On super large pictures (my background which is 1024 x 768 on resolution 1280 x 1024) it looks streched but i guess thats a given since it has been streched... lol
Hope this helps

AMD 3800+

Nvidia 7800GT
Thermaltake 430w PSU
Antec LAN-boy Case
Onboard Sound WOOOOT
Surprisingly not bad :p

I'll tell you there is no such thing as a good gaming LCD, not even one with 2ms reponse. But if you want a "good gaming" LCD, look for one with 2ms reponse and contrast ratio of about 700:1 or better and the best brightness you can get your eyes on. I'l look at Samsung and NEC as well as the Viewsonics you've probably been looking at. Samsung makes a great LCD.

I completely disagree. My LCD works great for gaming. 1000:1 contrast ratio, 4ms response time. Even decent 700:1/8ms response time monitors are good.

"I completely disagree."
this also comes down to personal perferance though. Many gamers refues to use LCD's even with such high numbers as yours and pretty much any good 3D editor, CAD worker, or professional photo editor won't use an LCD. CRT's still produce a better picture than ANY LCD. I won't tolerate LCD performance which is why I'll stick with my CRT until the day when an even better LCD comes out. But LCD technology is evolving fast and the ability for them to blow away CRT's is coming but it will be very expensive. Example? How would you like a 30,000:1 contrast ratio LCD with less than .5ms response time and dot pitch under .25? :-D

Graphics design artists need absolutely perfect color reproductions, specifically in blue that LCD's, while close, can't quite do yet.
Gamers flat out don't need absolute perfect color reproduction, which most gamers wouldn't be able to even notice the slight discrepancies even if they try. The reason is games never represent a real environment; it only approximates through rendering real environments, so we don't really know how it should look completely.
Factor in 40% less power consumption, signifiantly less strain on your eyes, less heat production, less radiation emitted, and more than double the life expectancy, LCD is the de facto choice. The only question is which one to get.
