I too have an HP pavillion a230n and upgraded to an Radeon 9600SE video card. (For pointers I would suggested non SE 9600 or better as the SE version is only 64 bit) With this adaption alone I have had not problems. Even the 9600Se did improve performance over the On board video.

If you add anything other than the video card you may have to look at powersupply with more wattage than the 250watts(I think) that this model comes with).

Good Luck

Almost ALL cards with SE in the model number suck....avoid them!

Make sure your board has an AGP slot...if you only have PCI slots to work with, your choices are very limited. If you DO have an AGP slot & want a decent 128MB/128-bit budget card that supports DX9, I'd recommend the Radeon 9550 as a "best buy":

If your willing to take a chance on a refurbed card (customer return)...here's the same card for about $14 less:

Here's how it compares to some other budget cards:

"Can i use this ATI Radeon 9600SE128MB..."

Sure...here's how I did it.

1. Carefully pry the heatsink off the ATI chip...it's held on by double sided tape and it ain't easy. Clean up the mess - about one hour.

2. Lap the heatsink and add a 40mm fan - about another hour.

3. Put a small dot of heatsink compound on the core and very carefully reinstall the heatsink...careful! the heatsink rocks around on the core and it's very easy to chip the core - about twenty minutes.

4. Stick it in the agp slot. Again be careful you don't rock the heatsink on the core - about ten minutes.

5. Install the drivers, benchmark the thing, and find out it pretty much sucks for any modern gaming. Try to overclock it and find out you can't with the ATI drivers installed - about 3 hours.

6. Download Omega drivers, read the instructions, completely uninstall the ATI drivers, reboot twice, install the Omega drivers, reboot again, discover you can finally overclock it and finally play a modern game at 1024x768 on medium settings - about an additional 4 hours.

7. Pat yourself on the back for voiding the warranty, spending 9 1/2 hours modding the card, and spending the night wondering how long it will last.

or

WHAT jam SAID!

but wait...

jam didn't have nearly the fun I had; his was up and running in fifteen minutes.

My material list:

99% rubbing alcohol - $1.99
lapping kit - $6.25
heatsink compound - $1.99
40mm fan - $3.00
voided warranty - cost of card + cost of replacement card (optional...it worked ok)

So the 9600se + the cost of the above supplies would've equaled the cost of a 9550 or 9600 non pro card.

Iorchova,

Providing HP did not change Motherboards within models, you do have an 4X/8X AGP slot.

Given this information I have seen others on this site write about Radeon 9550 (non SE) and Radeon 9600 that go for less than $100. so the easy answer to your question "Can i use this ATI Radeon 9600SE128MB AGP Video Card?" is yes. Would I get another 9600SE given a choice...NO! I would get at least a 9600 maybe even XT or PRO. Check on newegg.com (large selection but I have not yet purchased anything from them) and I would guess you would find a card you would be happy with. By the way, what games do you plan on playing....I've played HL2 with most medium settings with no AA ..1024X768 resolution. Not perfect, but it did play. There was an occasional slowdown due to heavy gunfire graphics etc...

or just spend $100 on a card that doesn't need moding.
