Is it standard PCI or PCI-express? The 8400GS is not a very good card but it is supported by the game.

Standard PCI runs at only 33MHz. AGP runs at 66MHz, PCI-express runs at 100MHz...obviously PCI is the slowest of the 3. So you'll be running a weak card on a slow bus.

Have a look at the following chart to see how the 8400GS ranks (scroll to the bottom of the list):

The 8400GS in that chart is a PCI-express card. The performance of a standard PCI card will be even lower.

This is the best Regular PCI card that you can do.

SPARKLE SP94GT1024D2LHP GeForce 9400 GT 1GB 128-bit GDDR2 PCI HDCP Ready

That's if you are willing to spend 90 dollars on it.

It's better then the 8400GS and it does have 128bit video memory on top of a large 1gb GDDR2 ram, but your card will greatly bottleneck before it will ever reach 1gb of ram resources. So that's more of a slaes pitch then anything else. The good news is Spore will play ok on it. So now the question, is it worth the 90 dollars? No, but if you really need it and you don't plan on buying another pc for a while then get it.
