ive had my radeon 9700 pro for about a year and a half-two years now, and ive just recently had a problem with it. While playing games, somtimes after a while, sometimes right when i start, little specks or pixels randomly shuffle thru textures. its like when u see a glitch in a game and u can see thru the level/map. The video card is hot when i put my hand near it, or touch the ram on it, but it has a fan on it. Ive never overclocked so i would think it would be able to cool itself. Ive tried many different drivers. Anyone know what the problem could be?

It's definitely overheating. Get better cooling or clock it down.

Make sure your fan isn't slowing down. My 9800 non pro's fan died after four months!

Usually if it is artifacting at stock clock speeds that means its dieing. But first check your fan, try cleaning it and see if it spins when you power up your cpu. If it doesn't, better replace it. VGA Silencer is a very good GPU Cooler for Radeons 96x~98x.

If the fan does spin and everything seems alrite for the cooling part then your card is probably dieing.

k? thx.

I just installed the Omega 5.2.28 Drivers for my card, i ran the "Scan for artifacts" program, and it found no problems in 8 minutes, how long should that check it to find a problem?

With the computer off, try taking your finger an spin the fan...is there any resistance at all spinning it? If so, the fan is seizing and needs to be replaced.

Does it move after you spin it? Even just wiggling a bit back and forth is a good sign.

I had the same issues with Quake 3, and I had to clock my 9800 Pro flashed to XT just a bit. However, if you aren't overclocking, trust me, it's a heat issue.

So heropsycho, are you saying if I suddenly get millions of artifacting everywhere at stock clock speeds then its a heat issue?

Trust me, it might be a heat issue but there are so many other possibilities. One common possibility is defective video card. Another is just a driver problem(usually happens if you switch from ATi to nVidia or nVidia to ATi.)

Anyways mergleh, check if it is really artifacting. if its only artifacting on one game then its probably just a game error that they need to fix. if it is artifacting in most games at stock speeds you should just return it, or if you can't, get a better card. getting a better cooler might fix it but what if it doesn't?

k? thx.

in Bloodrayne, the game crashes
Deus Ex 2, artifacting EVERYWHERE
Final Fantasy XI, artifacting on characters a little, on ground/mountain sides horribly

i switched from ati to omega drivers because i heard u could check the vid card temp there, but i dont see it anywhere lol

i think the card is still in warranty, so ill probably send it in

But he said he's had the card for over a year without any problems?

That's the tell tale classic symptom for slight overheating approaching damaging temperatures. That's what I was referring to, Fury. That's how I could tell my card was overclocked too much when I played Quake 3...amazing I knew immediately to clock it down when that happened.

Flat out artifacting with popping textures, etc. might be either overheating, or card is dying.

"in Bloodrayne, the game crashes
Deus Ex 2, artifacting EVERYWHERE"

Seems now it's gotten worse. I'm laying you odds the fan is dying.

Yeah, thank you LeftBehind. It's exceptionally unlikely the card would just die spontaneously. Unless of course the fan is dying. ;-)

If it is a heat issue, then the problem should be fixed by opening the case and having a fan blow air to the GPU?

Even so, if it is artifacting at stock clock speeds that usually mean its a bad sign.

k? thx.

Glad to see someone else with a 9700 Pro, that card is not very common......;~)

I can see hero's point, though can't say I had that problem with mine @ clock speed, but I 've had similar symptoms after I started overclocking mine, and all I had to do was back down the speed to get past the issue.

I am not going to advice you to void your warranty but I know the efficiency of the heatsink fan attached to that card is a joke. I have since replaced mine, I would recommend you take out the card and ensure it is not clogged up and that there is adequate airflow within your tower.
