You need to figure out if your system has an actual AGP port where you can plug in a new video card. If so, you'll have a much better selection of graphics cards. If not, you'll need a PCI video card.

Pop the cover of your PC.

Use this article to figure out what you have...

Post back if you have an AGP slot or just PCI, and I or someone else can recommend a card for your system.

I would also add 512M of memory to your machine while you're at it.

Very cool, you have an AGP slot!

I would recommend the ATI Radeon 9600 Pro is all you want to play is Sims 2.

If you're on a tight budget, the 9550's with 128-bit memory work well, too.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102484

(Before anyone comments, yes, I know it's a 256M card, no, it really won't help, but the memory is clocked the same as the 128M version, and it's the same price as the cheapest reputable brand 128M version, so why not?)

You can get something like a Radeon 9800 Pro or Nvidia 6600GT if you want to play other games instead that need more graphics power, such as Half Life 2, Far Cry, FEAR, etc. For just Sims 2 and expansions, either is a good card.

Do you need the extra 512M? No. But it will help everything in your system run better, and it's fairly inexpensive. ($50 or less)

Thank you.

As for the extra 512m is that something I can buy and do myself?
Thanks

Yes, and go for doing the graphics card yourself, too! Both are VERY easy. Just do one at a time. That way, if there's a problem, you know which caused it.

For the graphics card, download the latest drivers from www.ati.com and use those.
