Hey there. I'm looking to upgrade my PC in anyway possible. Its currently totally standard from new and in need of help. I have around 500 UK pounds to spend on the upgrade. My aim is to have a high end machine, capable of running games such as the demanding ArmA smoothly. The current specs are: AMD Athlon 4000+ Dual Core X2 64 160 GB SATA 1GB DDRII GeForce 6100 nForce 405. As you can see its extremely basic. I'm lost on what exactly to buy / upgrade. Any help is greatly appreciated.
Cheers for the reply! Ahh alrighty, will get on to it. One quick question, how will the processor hold up? Is it worth investing in a new motherboard? Thanks again.
Just said the same to another bloke....I'd dump the AMD and get a Dual Core Intel. And, Yes it is worth getting a new mobo that will at least support SLI and DDRIII.

There's no need to invest in a new motherboard & CPU, your X2 4000+ is adequate enough for the new game titles out there at this time. Furthermore, a super fast video card is by far critical to smooth gaming than a super fast CPU.
I would suggest you stick to voltage's advice: throw in another Gig of RAM & upgrade the video card to something like an 8800GT. Whatever is left off the £500, use it to get yourself a nice 24" LCD display.
why would you worry more about the GPU which is cheaper and easier to upgrade @ anytime. to get the most time out of your pc the mobo, processor, and case ARE the most important.
the X2 4000 is crap, and most games will be utilizing Multicores in the near future. DDRIII will be rampant, and multi gpu's will be easy and cheap to install....oh thats right you wont be able to, but at least you'll have a great gpu...lol!

Based on the above statements, I do not think I need to say anything further. You've pretty much confirmed just how familiar you are with computing hardware ..... ROFL!
Brilliant! Absolutely profound! Why, I haven't been this breath taken since that bully in 4th grade caught me humming Edelweiss.
But really, the X2-4000 is a respectable CPU that'll easily handle today's games, when paired with a good video card. The 8800GT is one of the best video cards out there.

obviously I am speaking w/ people who are BROKE, and can not afford real hardware. Respectable means average...Hardware is only as good as its last performance, and outdates quicker than Vitamin D milk.
didn't mean to upset you though. I always knew Jam was touchy but not you too Saber...lol
