I am rather unfamiliar with unix as far as an OS suitable for Gaming, if someone wants to educate me or point me towards some literature I would appreciate it.

Before you box yourself into a corner, go research how many games are out there for Unix (Linux).

Yeah, a lot of games use DirectX, which is a Microsoft development, there are some Linux ports of OpenGL games , but they are, well "not very good." It's the same situation as iMacs, but they are getting better,

Try playing with some CFD software, or Matlab, I think they are the best 'games' you can get for Solaris ;-)

Unix is not a gaming OS, pure and simple.
