Did the Belkin have Stateful Packet Inspection?

Does the netgear?

First NETGEAR sucks I would know I had one, you should have gotten linksys, I have and all my problems dissappeared.

First you need to make sure everything is hooked up correctly and working of course. Now you have not explained enough... Do you get internet at allll or is it you can not play multiplayer with just this game or all games.

If you cant play multiplayer that has nothing to do with your router, your router doesnt control that. You need to tell us exactly what it does or says when you try to play mutliplayer. But if you cant get internet thats entirely different and you need to tell us that.

It most certainly can interfere with multiplayer. New routers are not simple NAT devices anymore. They have true firewalls in them, often using SPI.

Trust me, I'm a network engineer well versed in firewalls.

netgear does not have good firewalls in them believe you me and the firewalls protect outgoing and incoming requests receptions etc, we dont know what brand he is and we know very little about the problem like i said before he needs to explain more.

My netgear had spi, it blocked EVERYTHING from my computer in and out, once i managed to fix it it didnt do ANYTHING so this could be very well be a problem with that but the reason I said that it wasnt because netgear has like two models that are spi, and they arent very cheap believe me.......

"netgear does not have good firewalls in them"

Explain how a Linksys router has a better firewall.

"firewalls protect outgoing and incoming requests receptions"

They protect outgoing, huh? How so?

"we dont know what brand he is"

We don't?

"recently changed my router to a netgear one from belkin"

He had a belkin. He now has a Netgear.

"My netgear had spi, it blocked EVERYTHING from my computer in and out, once i managed to fix it it didnt do ANYTHING"

You put your computer in a DMZ, didn't you? :-)

"IM BETTER WITH FIREWALLS"

Really? What firewalls have you worked with?

I should of explained more.. I ment just this game, i can play other games and can access the internet but i'v since found out that this is not the netgear router that's causing this problem or the game, it is a online gaming community program that runs on this game called GameSpy which doesn't support netgear and so it's down to them too fix this problem, looks like i'll have to buy another belkin or go without playing this game all together.

Redman...

The odds are a problem with the SPI code in the netgear router. Your Belkin worked most likely because it did not an SPI firewall.

http://kbserver.netgear.com/support_details.asp?dnldID=703

Check out the reference to a problem with GameSpy. I'd install that RC3 firmware if you have that particular netgear router. If not, look for firmware updates for your model.

SPI is valuable for internet security, so it's best to try to keep this netgear and upgrade the firmware to resolve the problem. If that doesn't work, then look at another brand. Linksys would be my recommendation.

Hope this helps, and sorry the other dude went postal in this thread.

Out of this whole post one thing that i definetly will agree with is that netgear home networking routers are indeed crap. I purchased a few and also recently been forced to use one or two and they are the most unstable and annoying things! I say home based ones as i havent had the displeasure of working with enterprise level netgear equipment yet, but i must say im not looking forward to it =D
