Subject: Time to upgrade?
OS: XP
CPU/Ram: 3200+ AMD 64/ 1Gig SD
Comment:
Well iv had the same computer for over 2 years now.. the specs are..

AMD 64 3200+
Geforce 6600GT
1 GIG SDRAM
Cant remember the motherboard atm :S
250Gig harddrive (Full :D)

So yea, Im wondering if i should upgrade or just sell the thing and build a new one all together.

My MB supports sli.. i wish i couldnt remember the board info.. but im miles away from the comp atm.. what kinda MB would i need to run a 7900-8800? And im guessing 2Gig is minimum these days for gaming?

Im looking for a decent upgrade.. staying with AMD (because of price) as iv been out of the whole building computers thing for a year what kinda price am i looking at for a decent gaming computer? My budget is around £350 (i have monitor/keyboard mouse ect)

Also what Graphic card and processor would you reccomend? is it worth going all out for an 8800GTS or is there not really that much diffrence between that an say a 7900?

The game i play on are not top spec by any means.. Black n white 2, Bit of wow priv serving, oblivion..

Thankie for the help, much appreciated.

I'm guessing that you have a S939 system & since your motherboard supports SLi, it's most likely on the nForce4 SLi chipset. So regardless of brand, it should be a good performer & have a lot of life left in it.

You could easily upgrade what you have rather than starting from scratch. All you'd need to get would be more RAM & a better gaming card...possibly a dual core CPU? I don't know what UK prices are like, but a S939 A64/X2 4200+ sells for under $75 US.

Here's a comparison:

its ASUS i belive n the Nforce4 S939 rings a bell :)

prices in UK are maby 30% more expensive than US i belive.. so a $75 (£40) 4200+ would be more like 60+ quid.. which im sure is still too cheap to be right.. you still see athalon 3400+ around that :S.. but then again i dont get my stuff from shops :)

What Gcard would you recommend? I was thinking something in the 8XXX series..b ut i read a thread a while back saying the 7XXX series can out preform some of em..

Thankies for the help

It is likely that you'll need a new PSU if your going for better graphics (above 7600GT). Have a look at that too.
