I have brought Rome Total War for my son not knowing the requirements for the game. I need to help to select a videocard compatible with DirectX 9.0b. I am an end user of computers with minimal tech knowledge. Guide me. Thanks.

The 1st thing you're gonna need to do is find out what slot type you have available...either PCI, AGP, or PCI-Express.
Then you'll have to give us an idea of your budget. DX9 compatible cards can run anywhere from about $50 to $400+
Asus A7N8X-X
1800+ @ 8.5 x 200MHz
768MB PC3200
Asus A9550 128MB/128-bit
Gamer Edition
WinME/WinXP Pro

put the cd in the cd-rom, right click, then find a text file called read me. it should tell you the system requirement.
P4 3.2GHZ
kingstone 1GB DDR 3200
ABIT AS8 mobo
Nvidia geforce 6800
Soundblaster 24-bit audigy 2

If you buy retail games one of the things displayed on the box is the system requirements for it, if you can't find the box go to the game's official website and check it out.
Actually, the heck with it, here you go:
Minimum System Requirements:
• English version of Microsoft® Windows® 98SE/ME/2000/XP• Pentium® III 1.0GHz (1000MHz) or Athlon™ 1.0GHz (1000MHz) processor or higher
• 256MB RAM
• 8x Speed CD-ROM drive (1200KB/sec sustained transfer rate) and latest drivers
• 2.9GB of uncompressed free hard disk space (plus 500MB for Windows® swap file)
• 100% DirectX® 9.0b compatible 16-bit sound card and latest drivers
• 100% Windows® 98SE/ME/2000/XP compatible mouse, keyboard and latest drivers
• DirectX® 9.0b (included)
• 1024 x 768 Monitor Resolution
• 3D Hardware Accelerator Card Required - 100% DirectX® 9.0b compatible 64MB Hardware Accelerated video card and the latest drivers*.
ATI® Radeon® 8500
ATI® Radeon 9000
ATI® Radeon 9500
ATI® Radeon 9600
ATI® Radeon 9700
ATI® Radeon 9800
All Nvidia® GeForce® 3 and higher.

I would recommend a couple of upgrades for the Dell Demension 4550, increase the ram to at least 512MB and get rid of the borderline GeForce4 MX, for your $200 budget you can get the ram upgraded and also get a 9800Pro and if you are willing, maybe even mod it to an XT.

My computer specifications are as follows:
Expansion Bus:
1. Bus type: PCI and AGP
2. AGP connector: 1
3. PCI connectors: 4
4. AGP bus protocol: 4x/2x modes at 1.5VRAM:
1. Architecture: DDR SDRAM
2. Memory connectors: 2
3. Memory capacity: 128-, 256, and 512-MB non-ECC DDR SDRAMI understand, I should get a videocard something like 9800 Pro (are there any different types such as AGP or PCI type?) and expand the RAM. For RAM should I call Dell and get the right RAM or go to a local store and buy any DDR RAM (Idon't want to buy something which does not match with my computer). Thanks a lot helping me with the basic questions.

Use the memory configuator at Crucial.com...enter your system's model info & they're list the possible choices. Then you can either buy from them or use that info to buy somewhere else.
The 9800 Pro is a great card, but it needs an additional +12v power plug-in from the power supply. If the PSU's inadequate, you'd either have to upgrade it or return/exchange the card for another with lower power requirements.
I suggest you check out newegg.com - go to the video card section & use their search engine. For the search terms select, AGP 4X/8X, 128MB, 128-bit, DX9 & a max price. See what you come up with. Then you can post back your choice & we'll vote, yay or nay...lol.
For a budget card (about $60), look at the Radeon 9550. For better performance, look at the Radeon 9600XT (about $100). There's also a great deal ($90) on the 9800SE but I believe it needs that power input. If you can verify the specs on your PSU (minimum amperage on the +12v rail should be 16-18A), the 9800SE would be a good budget choice.
If the PSU checks out, there's a GeForce 6600GT 128MB for about $150 after rebates:

From Crucial.com for RAM upgrade I came to this:
* odule Size: 512MB
* Package: 184-pin DIMM
* Feature: DDR PC2700
* Configuration: 64Meg x 64
* DIMM Type: UNBUFFERED
* Error Checking: NON-ECC
* Speed: 333
* SDRAM Timings: CL=2.5
* Specs: DDR PC2700 • CL=2.5 • UNBUFFERED • NON-ECC • DDR333 • 2.5V • 64Meg x 64I have already 256 MB on one slot, can I upgrade with 512 to total of 768 MB or get only 256 upgrade to total of 512?

Is your Pentium 4 the 400FSB or 533FSB version? A total of 512MB is probably sufficient, but hardcore gamers like to go with more...usually 1024MB (1GB). There are other choices besides that 512MB stick:

http://www.crucial.com/store/listparts.asp?model=Dimension+4550+%28533MHz+FSB%29&tabid=AM
Yikes! That's some video card list!
Scratch the Radeon 9250, the FX5200, FX5500 & FX5700LE...the Radeon 9550 (& above) beats em all.

The 9600 is only slightly better than the 9550, the 9600Pro is better than that, & the 9600XT (which didn't make your list) is the best of the Radeon 9600 lineup. Both the 9600Pro & 9600XT beat the 9800SE. Here's a bunch of benchtests to back me up:

Since you apparently don't wanna spend TOO much (I don't blame ya), here's what I'd recommend:

If you're willing to take a chance on a refurbished card (usually an opened-box, cutomer return), you can save some bucks. Personally, I've gotten several motherboards & video cards from the refurbed section & have never had any problems:

Thank you for the reply. I could not find exactly whether my system is 400 Hz or 533 Hz FSB. But the Dell part description says: Processor, 80532, 2.0G, 512K, 400, SOCKET N, C1. Probably means 400 Hz FSB.
Still my question is if I keep 256 MB RAM on one slot and 512 on the other should it matter. The one I already have is: Dual In-line memory module, 256, 333M, 32X64, 8K, 184.
Regarding the videocard I am inclined to buy: SAPPHIRE 100573L-BK Radeon 9600XT 128MB 128-bit DDR AGP 4X/8X Video Card - Retail
Model #: 100573L-BK
Item #: N82E16814102510Please let me know if that doesn't exceed my computer capacity with voltage and wattage etc. I need to place the order soon to get the products before 21st June as I am away for 10 days from them (or I have to order later). Thanks a lot for the help.

If your board supports dual channel mode, adding a 2nd stick of 256MB of matching specs would be the way to go. If it doesn't, you can add either another 256MB or 512MB, whichever you prefer. 768MB total should give a little better gaming performance.
Good choice going for the 9600XT...I was hoping you'd go that route ;)

I have already ordered 9600XT. I may bother you all if I get into trouble installing. Do I need to remove the preent videocard and install the new one in that place? Please give me a hint how to remove te old driver. Thanks.

I have installed 9600XT and added 512 Memory. Rome Total war is working fine. I spent under $150 but my son's excitement was priceless. Thank you all for the help, I couldn't have done without your help. Bye.
