That game requires Direct X 9 hardware, it seems according to that error message. Pixel shaders are not supported on the GeForce 4 MX cards. You'll need to upgrade to an FX or Radeon 9500- up vid card.

Or it may be that that card is not supported, check the readme.txt on the game cd's for a list of supported video cards.

The Geforce 4 MX cards are mostly DX 7 cards, they are crap, you need a Geforce FX or Radeon 9500 or higher to play it, don't get a Geforce FX 5200 they are crap to, just Geforce 2 with DX 9 effects plus I tried it on the Splinter Cell Pandora demo and was only getting like 12 fps, Get a Radeon 9800 Pro 128mb, they are great prices now and I get on average 80 fps on that game, or if your on a budget, get a Geforce 5700 Ultra, they will play it great to

Get a 9800 Pro. Its about the same price as Fx5700U. Look around Newegg, they sell 9800 Pro's for $210.

Lol...MonkeyMan2 u really dunno what Pixel Shader means do you. Its OK. Pixel Shader is a FEATURE (Ability) found in a new generation video card like the GeForce3, 4Ti, FX and Radeon 9x series. This feature allows the programmer to create a rough realistic surface on a flat texture. It looks like Bump Mapping (Emboss) but its not. How to say... Try games like "Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind", on both GeForce3,4Ti,FX and GeForce2/4MX look at the water surfaces and u will see the differences.

I have the same problem...
I have a GeForce4 MX 420, it also gives me the pixel shader support error.

My game also does the same thing where it starts to load then exits to the desktop.

But, the support website says that the entire GeForce 4 family is supported( including the MX).

http://support.ubi.com

anyone know if the pixel shading issue is for sure what's causing the problem?

Ola Guys !
I've got the same trouble with that damned "pixel shader support". Have some of you tried to play other "new" games, like Far cry for exemple, without meeting the same problem than with Splinter Cell ? Just to know if it worth to invest in that new games generation or to get back to our old fellow Pacman and other Space invaders !!!

Thank you and take care

Yup!!!... same problem... seems to me like UbiSoft are just out to sting people for their money and make them all have to spend loads of money on new parts for their computers, just to play 1 game. All my other games work fine.... but guess what??? Far Cry AND splinter cell wont work. Never gonna buy another ubisoft game unless this crap system specs gets sorted out. By reading this it seem like 100s of people have been stung by the same problem. At least i'm not alone. Cheers guys

Hi guys!!
Ive got a Geforce2 Mx/Mx 400 and at first the Spinter Cell diagnosis had a ? next to the graphic card name and 2 crosses next to "Non power of two..." and "Pixel shading"
But then i downloaded the new Nvidia driver and now there is only a cross next to "Pixel shading"
Does anybody know whether you can download pixel shading off websites?
And yes, if you have a Geforce 3 card or higher and it doesn't work try downloading the latest drivers from your graphics card website.

The patch you speak of I don't think will fix the Pixel problem. It is a hardware problem that can only be fixed by changing the hardware.

We should all get together send an e-mail (one e-mail with all our names) to UBI to have our money refunded due to their lack of warning/advertising on their product. Due to the fact that there is no warning on the box of Pixel Shading Conflicts they should refund our purchase.

Let me know if you agree.

We all seem to be in the same boat. I downloaded both the Multi and Single Player Demos, I couldn't even get the Multiplayer one to load because of the Inadequate Pixel Shader support. I managed to get to the point of clicking on New Game in the single player before it went back to my desktop.
I emailed nVidia to ask about the problem but I havn't got a reply yet.

do this:

Reboot the system to the samertert panel in the system configuration and invert the 3D carter from the folder c:/carter.pixelshadersupport and make two supplamentary backing devices capable of copying a neutralised CD. The semi-horizontal panal will now indicate the your system shall reboot in 10 seconds and having done so do the following: delete the folders, pixel shader info and psi and trace their routes to their initial folders and convert the distil to the D drive insuring that you uninstall the accelerator drivers and reinstall them to the same backing device you deleted the pixel shader to. Having done this you now comply the capacity disc involking the standard cell in such a way, that the fluctual device inside is decomposed of and install to the reber device situated in the usb port 2, XL-S 700. The file 98SE should be added to the games initial requirments insuring the the unautharised acces box shall be ticked. Invert the 360 degree pixel utraliser and undergo a max boot discharge, hence a manual corperate. In the del capacitor you need to trace the motherboard and install a Tb and TL capable standard 56.61 BD support video compramiser allowing a maximum flow of pixel shading detectors and click the "DB installation startup" button situated on the rear end of your dolby device. This shall install in aproxamately 15-20 mins and should dictate the capable flow of pixels to the capable requirments of your PC. Download Dort DB pixel manulator XL 2 from: www.maximumgames.com insuring they are installed AFTER the pixel drivers have been detected. Allow the computer to auto start the CD-R 80 XL-S menu, and select to copy main components manually. This will allow you to choose ONLY the 10 and 20 gate cells. Having done this you finally have to restart the computer and ENJOY PLAYING SPLINTER CELL.

Email me back to let us know if you get it and if it doesnt work email me and i'll send you a program that will allow you to set the requirments easily- would have done it now but only prob is it takes 3 hours to send. Rite-o

Holy wack man, this is the most complex & difficult set of instructions I have ever read. And it sounds dangerous too. Is this whole procedure for real or are you just making fun ? I really appreciate the solution that you wrote and I'm not a pc knowledge rookie, but I really don't understand what I have to do. Please send me the program you said, that will allow an easily requirments setting. My nickname is adi_colegu on Yahoo Messenger if you want to communicate with me.
P.S. Please reply ! I'm trying from more than 2 weeks to make splinter cell work, just like i did with prince of persia, and absolutely nothing works because of that god-damn pixel shader which is missing from my GeFroce 4 MX 440. And no official authority in this field (nVidia,UbiSoft,Microsoft...) doesn't give a flyin' f@ck about the non-suported video-cards gamers. There has to be a way to solve this bug!
Thank you for understanding !

Thanks a whole lot Joe, you saved me and a lot of my friends using GF4 MX 440.The game runs fascinating. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw myself one step further, beyond the "loading and crashing point". I'm grateful to everyone who made this solution work efficiently. Respect !
I'm posting the pixel shader fix that did the trick for me here, for everyone who needs it (it can also be found on the link in Joe's reply - see above) :

1st METHOD

1, Install the Video Card driver 45.23
2, Set the 3D Analyze v2.31 with the following options:

DirectX DeviceID's
VendorID: 4098
DeviceID: 20812

Pixel and Vertex Shader
force max. pixel shader version 1.4: checked
skip pixel shader version 1.1: checked
skip pixel shader version 1.4: checked
skip pixel shader version 2.0: checked
force low precision pixel shader: checked

Remove Stuttering
quality mode: checked

3, Run the game(splintercell2.exe) and enjoy it!

Notice:
1, Try it with Windows 2000/XP and DirectX 8.1, it maybe only run on Geforce 4 MX 440 and Nvidia driver v45.23.
2, Selcet "x:\Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow\offline\system\splintercell2.exe" and run it in 3D Analyze v2.31.
3, It maybe not support all special effect in the game, such as flashlight and infrared receiver etc.
4, Multiplayer mode maybe not be supported.

yah it worked for me too until i got to the second half of level 2 and then it keeps crashing at the door to the stairs in the cryogen lab. can anyone help?... oh and dont use the device id's listed in the last post, theyll make your comp think your using an ATI Radeon 8900 or something like that.

I had several critical errors too at the 2-nd level, but not at the door to the stairs in the cryogen lab. They all occured when Sam Fisher was dying, till the very end of the level. And when I got back into the game and try to load a quicksave or a tempsave - what do you know - got the same error over and over. Damn Ubi games - full of errors that make you go crazy and extremely absorbing and at the same time so you can't give up trying to experiencing them.
Joe if you can't pass the crashing point go to www.dlh.net, search for SC:PT and download the "all levels unlocker" and continue the game from the 3-rd level (which is incredibily great and runs much better than the 2-nd one - whitout ultradark/ultrabright walls & floors). That's what I did after playing 2-nd level 5-6 times almost till the end.

P.S.
Does anybody know what settings must be checked in 3d analyze in order to make thermal vision work ? Is there a possible fix for this function ? Pls reply ! Thanks
