Did I read this right? This 3rd edtion can cost upwards of $2500??
http://xbitlabs.com/news/multimedia...
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ OC 2.7ghz
2GB Dual Channel DDR 3200
Nvidia 7900GT
SATA II 2x 300gig 7200rpm 16mb cache RAID-0+1
Gigabyte Nforce 4 SLI

Bloody hell. 500 bucks for a console was bad enough, but people justified that because it had the Blu-Ray player in it... But $2500?! It doesn't even have that much more 'in it' according to the article, well apart from being possibly totally redesigned... They can stick it where the sun don't shine as far as I'm concerned *hugs his PC*.
Slim Vision

"“media-centric”-edition will feature anti-vibration mechanism on the Blu-ray disc drive, 512MB XDR memory, more advanced power supply unit and two HDMI connectors to divide audio and video data."
That price is crazy. I can see it being 200 dollars more mostly due to the extra HDMI connection and extra 256 XDR ram, but 1,000 to 1900 more is insane.
I mean, 512mb XDR ram won't be taken advantage of in terms of game play because all the gaming developers will be designing the ps3 games around 256 XDR ram in which 99% of all ps3's will be. It's not like a pc where the gaming companies pc game requirments give you a range of ram requirments for best results. As for the anti Blu-Ray vibration, that should be a recall more so then a upgrade.

wow......
Is damn expensive.....
At first, I am still thinking to get one PS3...
But now, ;(Strider_ozy

well you can still get the first ps3 edition for 500 and the second ps3 edition for 600. This one is for the ultimate multi-media person, but to be honest other then the extra 256 XDR ram and extra HDMI port that I guess would make it stand out, it's no diff then the 500 dollar one.

if memory serves correctly, sony did this with the ps2, but it either didn't do well enough and they cancelled production shortly thereafter, or, it didn't even go into production in the first place, i forget. wouldnt surprise me if the same happened to this.

Yes, Sony did release another PlayStation, the PSX sometime a few years ago. It was designed mainly for media playback, rather than gaming. It had a DVD/CD Drive, cable and satilite hookups, a big hard drive for Digital Video Recorder (DVR) support (Similer to TiVo services), MP3 playback, and a whole lot of stuff. I dont remeber exactly how much it used to cost, but all I know is it was way more expensive than the PS3. When it came out in Japan, it failed big time. The PSX never saw a release in the US and was discontunued eventually. The main reason why I think the PSX failed: we all ready have all that stuff!

I mean, did they not learn from the PSX?
Why in the heck would someone buy this version of the ps3 just for a couple of minor updates?
Is Sony was smart they should have designed the ps3 you that you will be able to upgrade the ps3 in the future.

Upgrades to consoles? They would end up like PC's then, defeating one of the main selling points, simplicity, true plug and play......
Can't remember who said it up there but they were right, the people this is aimed at wouldn't really be looking at price in the first place
